The revelations of espionage network in Arunachal Pradesh and border related activities have increased the concern of security agencies. Police have arrested four suspects of a Pakistan-linked espionage network in the last ten days. Meanwhile, local people have informed about the presence of Chinese army near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and possible infiltration.

According to the police, the arrested accused were sending information about army activities and other sensitive information to Pakistani handlers. Initial investigation has also revealed indications of this network being linked to China. Security experts are linking this to the strategy of ‘hybrid war’, in which espionage, infiltration and military pressure are used together.

State Home Minister Mama Natung has said that strict action will be taken against those involved in espionage activities and there will be no compromise on national security.

Chinese activities near LAC, claim to build camp

Local people claim that from September 2024, the Chinese Army has set up camps about 60 km deep in the Kapapu area of Anjaw district. He says that the situation is like 2022. However, the government is calling it ‘overlapping patrolling’.

Meanwhile, China’s activities are also being monitored at Lhunje Air Base in Tibet. Here, information has come to light about construction of 36 hardened aircraft shelters and deployment of stealth jets about 40 km away from the McMahon Line.

Fear of setting up a sleeper cell

According to the investigating agencies, the arrested suspects were trying to develop sleeper cells by assimilating into the local Muslim communities. The role of some Bangladeshi youth is also being considered suspicious.

West Siang SP says that this case could be part of a larger espionage module involving Assam and Arunachal. Agencies are linking this to a strategy in which Pakistan can play the role of a proxy.

Arrest from Itanagar, network till Assam

  • On December 11, Nazir Ahmed Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir of Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir were arrested from Itanagar. Both were posing as blanket sellers and were in touch with Pakistani handlers through encrypted Telegram channels. According to the investigation, he had received instructions to help in illegal infiltration and become a courier for arms smuggling.
  • On December 13, two other youths from Kashmir were also caught. Investigation has indicated that the network extends to Assam. The arrest of a retired Air Force officer Kulendra Sharma from Tezpur is also being linked to this link.

Accused of sending information through encrypted channels

Investigating agencies say that the accused were sharing information across the border through encrypted Telegram channels. Defense experts are fearing possible ‘two-front’ pressure in the Northeast, citing the 1999 Kargil war.

According to him, India has deployed about 1.20 lakh soldiers in Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Despite this, the spread of espionage networks is being considered a serious challenge from security point of view.

Action of agencies intensified

  • Search and investigation operations have been intensified in Assam and other northeastern states.
  • This is being considered an important alert related to national security.
  • Agencies are constantly monitoring the security situation related to India-China-Pakistan.
