Happy life in childhood, then everything changed

Born on 19 April 1968 in Mumbai, Arshad Warsi had a financially good early childhood. His father Ahmed Ali Khan was a Warsi poet and singer. The family’s life was comfortable, but with time things began to deteriorate. The family lost its wealth due to legal disputes and financial losses. They had to leave the big house and live in small houses.

The biggest shock in Arshad’s life came when he lost his parents at an early age. In Raj Shamani’s podcast, he told that he was only 14 years old when he lost control of his parents. This incident made him responsible before his age.

Arshad had said – “I had become quite mature for my age. After my father’s death, the situation kept getting worse. After my mother’s death, I could not even cry immediately, because I felt that now I have to handle everything. After several weeks, I broke down and cried.”

I still haven’t forgotten my mother’s last memory.

Arshad told that his mother was an ordinary housewife and cooked very well. He was suffering from kidney failure, so he had to undergo regular dialysis. During the treatment, the doctors had given strict instructions not to give him water. But his mother repeatedly asked for water and Arshad refused every time, following the doctors’ advice.

He said that the night before his death, his mother had called him and asked for water, but he did not give it. His mother died the same night. According to Arshad, this incident still shakes him to the core.

He said that at that time he felt that if he had given water to his mother and then she died, he would have held himself responsible for the rest of his life. Now he feels that perhaps his mother’s last wish should have been fulfilled. He believes that many times the family members take decisions based on their guilt more than on the wishes of the patient.

Had to leave studies due to financial constraints, sold lipstick

After the death of his parents, the responsibility of running the house fell on Arshad’s shoulders. The financial crisis was so severe that he had to leave studies after 10th. He did many small jobs to earn his living. He worked as a door-to-door salesman in a cosmetics company. According to several reports, he also sold lipstick and cosmetic products in Mumbai buses.

Arshad Warsi says, “I used to sell lipstick door-to-door. Many people used to close the door, but that period taught me to talk to people and face life.” He told that at that time he could earn only a few hundred rupees by working hard throughout the week, whereas about Rs. 800 were spent every week on his mother’s treatment.

He said, “I used to do musical shows on weekends, for which I used to get Rs 175. That’s when I understood how important it is to be financially strong in life.”

Dance changed life

Amidst the struggle, Arshad never lost his passion for dancing. He was interested in dancing since childhood. Gradually she decided to make dance her career. Passion for dance changed his life. He joined Akbar Sami’s dance group.

Won the All India Dance Competition in 1991 and stood fourth in the Modern Jazz category of the World Dance Championship held in London in 1992. After this he started a dance studio and started doing choreography in films.

Apart from the title track of ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’, he also choreographed in films like ‘Thikana’ and ‘Kaash’. From here his life took a new turn.

Jaya Bachchan caught my eye, got my first chance

While working as a choreographer, he met many film personalities. During this time, seeing his talent, Jaya Bachchan gave him a chance to act in Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL) film ‘Tere Mere Sapne’.

Arshad Warsi entered Bollywood as an actor with ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, released in 1996. The film was made under the banner of Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL) and directed by Joey Augustine. Before this he had made his mark as a choreographer.

His entry was not because of any film family, but on the basis of talent. Arshad had said that he would be grateful to Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Joy Augustine for trusting him.

Didn’t get desired work after first film

After ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, Arshad thought that the pace of his career would accelerate, but it did not happen. In the next few years, he worked in many films including ‘Hero Hindustani’, ‘Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet’, ‘Mujhe Meri Biwi Se Bachao’, ‘Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani’, but most of the films could not achieve the expected success at the box office. During this period, he got less good roles and he felt that he had to prove himself again in the industry.

Had to pay the price of being an outsider

In an interview given to The Indian Express, Arshad Warsi talked about the struggle of outsiders in the film industry. He had said- “There is a section of the industry which gets many opportunities to give a hit film. But for those who do not come from a film family, the struggle starts again after one flop.”

Arshad said that with time he accepted this truth and chose to focus on his work instead of complaining.

It was thought that ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ would prove to be the last film.

In 2003, when director Rajkumar Hirani offered him the role of ‘Circuit’ in ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’, Arshad felt that it could prove to be the last film of his career. He was not sure that the character of Circuit would become so popular.

Arshad Warsi says- “I was sure that my career would end after ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’. I thought that this role was very small and it would not benefit me.” He told that at that time even Sanjay Dutt was not completely confident about the success of the film.

Didn’t like the role of ‘Circuit’ in the beginning

Arshad Warsi says, “If you just look at the character, it was not a very big role. If the film had not worked, the character would have had no meaning.” Describing ‘Circuit’ as a “God-given role”, he said that he was lucky that the film became a superhit and the audience wholeheartedly accepted the pairing of Circuit and Munna Bhai.

The name of the circuit was previously itchy

Very few people know that the character of Circuit in ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ was different earlier. He was named ‘Khujli’. Arshad Warsi suggested changing the name from Rajkumar Hirani. He also gave his suggestions on the character’s clothes, hairstyle and many scenes. These changes later became the identity of ‘Circuit’.

After the success of ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’, people started recognizing Arshad Warsi less by his real name and more by the name ‘Circuit’. Speaking to The Indian Express, he told that during a bike trip in Ladakh, a person said that he looked like Arshad Warsi and he should earn money by mimicking him. Arshad did not reveal his identity and enjoyed the incident.

‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ created a permanent identity

‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ released in 2006 made the character of Circuit more popular. After this, Arshad Warsi was not just a comedy actor, but made his mark as a versatile artist. He proved his acting ability with films like ‘Golmaal’ series, ‘Dhamaal’, ‘Ishqiya’ and ‘Jolly LLB’.

‘Golmaal’ made a big face of comedy

Arshad Warsi played the role of Madhav in Rohit Shetty’s ‘Golmaal’ series. Even among actors like Ajay Devgan, Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade, his comic timing caught the attention of the audience. This role was completely different from his earlier comic characters. Arshad had told about this series – I did ‘Asur’ for two reasons. First, its story was brilliant and unexpected. Arshad Warsi’s personal life has also been balanced. He married Maria Goretti in 1999. Both of them met during their dance days.
