The government of US President Donald Trump is preparing to make it more expensive for foreign students to get a job after studying in America. After completing their studies, students may have to pay a fee of around Rs 96 lakh ($1 lakh) to get a job. This fee is proposed for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Under OPT, foreign students are allowed to work in America after completing their studies. This proposal has received the approval of the White House. However, this rule has not been implemented yet. Before implementation, objections and suggestions will be sought from people and institutions. OPT allows foreign students to work for 12 months. OPT i.e. Optional Practical Training allows foreign students studying in America to work after completing their degree. Under this, graduating students generally get the option to work for 12 months. Students of STEM subjects i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths get an extension of additional 24 months. That means eligible STEM students can get a chance to work under OPT for a total of 36 months. After OPT, some students use other work visa options to work in the US for a longer period of time. At present the fee for OPT is Rs 40 thousand. At present the fee for OPT is around Rs 40 thousand. If the proposed fee of $1 lakh is implemented, students will have to pay many times more than the current fees. For foreign students studying in America, this expense will be in addition to tuition fees and living expenses. This will put additional financial burden on students planning to work in America after studies. More than 2 lakh Indian students are doing jobs under OPT. More than 2 lakh Indian students are doing jobs under OPT in America. Indian students have the highest number among foreign students. If the proposed fee is implemented, it may also have a direct impact on Indian students planning to work in America after studies. Education expenses are around Rs 50 lakh, Rs 1 crore set aside for job. In America, graduation fees can be around Rs 50 lakh. Apart from this, students also have to spend on accommodation, food and other needs. Many students cover their living expenses by working part-time while studying. In such a situation, the proposal of fees of around Rs 96 lakh for OPT after completion of studies can significantly increase the total cost of the students. About 10 lakh foreign students are studying in America. At present about 10 lakh foreign students are studying in America. For those students who want to work in America after studies, OPT is an important path. If there is such a huge increase in fees, the number of students looking for studies and job options in other countries instead of America may increase. In European countries like Germany and France, there are work options available for foreign students after studies. However, this is the proposed fee as of now. Before implementing it, the related process will be completed and objections and suggestions will be sought from the people. Columbia University sent an email to the students amid the proposal. Columbia University has sent an email to the students assuring them about the current uncertainty. The university said it understands the situation and is monitoring the developments.
