America has tightened the scrutiny of all applicants for H-1B and H-4 visas. From December 15, online and social media verification has also been included in the visa process. This rule will apply to applicants from all countries around the world.
The US Embassy in India said that this step has been taken to stop the misuse of H-1B visas and illegal immigration.
After this decision, the scheduled visa interviews of thousands of applicants in India have been postponed. Many interviews have now been rescheduled from March to May. Due to this, those people who have already come to India for interview and are not able to go back to America due to lack of visa are more troubled.
According to the embassy, applications for H-1B and H-4 visas are being taken, but due to increased scrutiny, the process may take longer. The Indian government has said that it is continuously talking to the US on this issue, so that Indian students and professionals do not face problems.

Indians get 70% of H-1B visas
- H-1B visa What is- H-1B visa is issued to high skilled professionals like doctors, engineers, software professionals. This visa came into existence through a bill in the US Congress in 1990.
- What is the effect of Trump’s order- Indians will be hardest hit, as 70% of the total H-1B visas issued each year are issued to Indian professionals.
- H-1B visa How much is the fee- Earlier the fee was around 9 thousand dollars, but in September 2025, Trump increased it to around 90 lakh rupees.
- What is the duration of this visa- Is issued twice for 3 years. After the total period of 6 years, the applicant can apply for Green Card i.e. the stage before citizenship.
Trump’s sometimes yes, sometimes no on H-1B
Trump has sometimes had a yes, sometimes no attitude on H-1B visas in 9 years. In his first term in 2016, Trump had called this visa against American interests. The extension of this visa was suspended in 2019. Just last month, he took a U-turn and said – We need talent.

Gold card will give you the right to stay forever
Apart from changes in H-1B, Trump had launched 3 new types of visa cards. Facilities like ‘Trump Gold Card’, ‘Trump Platinum Card’ and ‘Corporate Gold Card’ have also been launched. Trump Gold Card (worth Rs 8.8 crore) will give the person the right to unlimited residency (stay forever) in America.

Tech companies sponsor the most H-1B
India produces millions of engineering and computer science graduates every year, who play a big role in America’s tech industry. Companies like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Cognizant and HCL sponsor most of their employees on H-1B visas.
It is said that India exports more people i.e. engineers, coders and students to America than goods. Now due to expensive fees, Indian talent will move towards Europe, Canada, Australia and Middle East countries.
