The US canceled the special exemption given by the US to Chabahar port of Iran on Thursday. This is a major setback for India, as this port is a very important project of India. From 29 September 2025, the US can impose a fine on companies involved in running this port, paying or any related work. The US State Ministry has given this information.
America said- We want to stop Iran’s wrong antics. As long as Iran will invest money in spreading attacks, terrorism and unrest, we will take every step to stop it. The decision is part of President Donald Trump’s “Maximum Pressure” policy, which began in February 2025.
Chabahar was exempted from Afghanistan’s help and development in 2018. Now it has been abolished. India uses this port to reach Afghanistan and Central Asia, so that it does not have to pass through Pakistan.
India leased Chabahar in 2024 for 10 years. Under this, India will invest $ 120 million here and will give a credit line of $ 250 million (cheaper debt).

Chabahar was exempted to help Afghanistan
America says that the situation has changed now. Earlier there was an elected government in Afghanistan and there was a way to send Chabahar food and drink. But after the arrival of the Taliban in 2021 and India’s agreement on this port of this port by 10 years, the US feels that Iran can benefit from it.
With the end of this exemption, India’s companies may suffer money loss or legal problems. This has increased the threat to this important project of India.

In 2024, India leased this port for 10 years.
What is Chabahar Port and why is it necessary for India
Chabahar port is an important project of India located in Iran. It helps India trade directly from Afghanistan, Central Asia, Russia and Europe. Earlier India had to pass through Pakistan to send Afghanistan goods, but it was difficult due to border dispute.
Chabahar made this path easier. India sends wheat to Afghanistan from this port and can bring gas from Central Asia.
In 2018, India and Iran had signed an agreement to develop Chabahar. The US gave India a discount in some sanctions for this project. The port is strategically important for India compared to Pakistan’s Gwadar Port, which is being built by China.

In 2018, there was an 18-month small agreement between India and Iran regarding this port, which continued to be extended again and again.
What has India done so far for the port
India started talking to Iran in 2003 for the Chabahar port during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. This stopped due to America-Iran tension. In 2013, Manmohan Singh spoke of investment of Rs 800 crore.
In 2016, PM Narendra Modi signed an agreement with the leaders of Iran and Afghanistan, in which India announced a loan of Rs 700 crore for a terminal and Rs 1250 crore for the development of the port.
In 2024, Foreign Secretary Vinay Quatra discussed connectivity to Iran’s Foreign Minister. According to the Indian company IPGL, it will have a capacity of 82 million tonnes on completion of the port.
