Amul has been ranked as the globally strongest food and dairy brand in Brand Finance’s Global Food and Drinks Report 2024. Amul wrote on social media platform X – We are happy to inform that Brand Finance, the world’s leading brand consultancy, has ranked us as the most valuable, strongest food, dairy and non-alcoholic brand in its report.

Brand Finance’s annual report highlights Amul’s growing influence in international markets. The company’s brand strength was evaluated with a Brand Strength Index (BSI) score of 91.0 out of 100, giving it an AAA+ rating.

After Amul, two Chinese companies are at second and third place
After Amul, China’s Mengniu Dairy and Yili are at the second and third positions. The top 10 of this list includes one company each from India, Vietnam, Saudi, Finland and Denmark. Whereas, 3 companies from China and 2 companies from France are included.

Amul has 85% share in the butter market
Amul has an 85% share in the Indian butter market. Whereas, Amul has an 85% share in the milk market and a 66% share in the cheese market. However, the dairy industry faces its own challenges. The report shows a 6% decline in the total value of the top 10 dairy brands, which is now $43.8 billion.

Amul was a movement, not a profit-making business organisation
Amul is not a company. It does not have a single owner. It is a cooperative society. Actually, it is a cooperative movement. It started when the country was not independent.

In 1945, the farmers of Kheda district of Gujarat started a strike against the exploitative policy of the British government. After this, in 1946, the Amul cooperative society was started by collecting only 247 liters of milk daily from two small villages.

In 1945, contractors used to collect milk from Anand and send it to Mumbai. However, milk producers were angry as they were not getting the right price for their milk. Due to this, Sardar Patel called a farmers’ meeting in 1946 under the chairmanship of Morarji Desai.

In this, it was decided to establish cooperative milk producing societies and dairy run by district cooperative milk producing union. In this way, Amul was established on 14 December 1946 with the establishment of Kheda District Milk Producers Union.

A mechanical engineer became India’s ‘Milkman’
Dr. Verghese Kurien has played an important role in making Amul a brand. 28-year-old mechanical engineer from Kerala, Verghese Kurien came to Anand city in 1949 as a government employee to run a dairy. No one knew then that Dr. Kurien would make Anand the milk capital of India. Amul (Anand Milk Union Limited) was born in 1955 under his management.

There is no answer to the 55 year old ‘Amul Girl’ even today
The girl in a polka dotted frock, moving her tongue on the buttered bread slice, has become the brand identity of Amul today. The ‘Amul Girl’, who gives a one-line message on current topics everywhere, including Amul’s products, hoardings, advertisements and social media, was born in 1966.
