India and Seychelles on Sunday announced 19 major agreements and development projects. These decisions taken in the presence of Prime Minister Modi and Seychelles President Patrick Herminy will strengthen cooperation in many areas like defence, digital payments, health, education, space and maritime security.
The biggest announcement was that now India’s UPI based digital payment system will be started in Seychelles also. India has so far signed agreements with more than 23 countries regarding UPI. Currently, payment facility through UPI is available in 9 countries.
Apart from this, India will give a line of credit (loan) of Rs 1,250 crore to Seychelles, through which the development projects there will be completed. Both countries also signed important agreements like extradition treaty, preparation of new national hospital and peaceful use of space.
India also handed over one Fast Patrol Vessel, 10 utility vehicles, 5 boats, 6 ambulances, 500 MT of rice and 8,500 MT of cement to Seychelles. Along with this, it was also agreed to increase cooperation in cyber security, artificial intelligence, agriculture, education and health sectors. These announcements have come at a time when both the countries are celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a special session of the National Assembly of Seychelles on Sunday. He became the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. Earlier, the then President of India Pratibha Patil had done this.
PM Modi was awarded Seychelles’ highest civilian honor by President Patrick.
PM Modi met Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. He had also come to attend the 50th Independence Day celebrations of Seychelles.
Chief guest at Modi Golden Jubilee National Day
Prime Minister Modi was on Sunday honored with Seychelles’ highest civilian honour, ‘Guardian of Blue Horizon’. Till now he has received the highest civilian honor of 34 countries.
Modi will attend the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence today as the chief guest. On this occasion, a contingent of the Indian Armed Forces and Indian Navy’s warship INS Tarkash and hydrographic survey ship INS Ikshak will also be part of the parade and celebrations. During this time, the marching contingent and naval band of the Indian Navy will also participate in the parade.

1. Chief Guest at Golden Jubilee National Day
PM Modi will attend the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence on June 29 as the chief guest. On this occasion, a contingent of the Indian Armed Forces and Indian Navy’s warship INS Tarkash and hydrographic survey ship INS Ikshak will also be part of the parade and celebrations.
2. Economic package of 175 million dollars
India has announced an economic package of US $ 175 million (1651 crore) to strengthen the development and infrastructure of Seychelles. Apart from this, India gifted Indian made Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ‘PS Lespavar’ to Seychelles.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted the Indian-made Fast Patrol Vessel PS Lespevar to the President of Seychelles, Dr. Patrick Herminie. This will strengthen Seychelles’ maritime surveillance capability.
3. Signing of new agreements
India and Seychelles announced 19 important agreements and declarations. This included extradition treaty, introduction of UPI based digital payments, digital payments etc.
4. Modi planted coco de mer sapling
The Coco de Mer plant and its fruit are found naturally only in Seychelles. The seed found inside its fruit is considered to be the largest and heaviest seed in the world. The weight of a single seed can range from 15 to 30 kg.
The male and female trees of Coco de Mer are separate. The female fruit looks like a woman’s hip. It is also called ‘double coconut’. At the same time, the male flower looks like the male genitalia. Due to this unique structure, many types of folktales and mythological stories have been prevalent about this plant for centuries.
This tree takes 20 to 40 years to mature and bear fruit. It takes 6 to 7 years for a fruit to become fully ripe. This tree lives an extremely long life; It is believed that they can live for 200 to 350 years.
In ancient times, when this fruit floated in the sea and reached the shores of Maldives or India, people thought that it was the fruit of some magical tree growing at the bottom of the sea. For this reason, it was named ‘coco de mer’ in French, which means coconut of the sea.
Modi is only the second Prime Minister to visit Seychelles
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had visited Seychelles in 1976. Seychelles became independent in the same year. India also sent naval warship INS Nilgiri to the independence celebrations of Seychelles. After this, Indira Gandhi again visited Seychelles in 1981. After his visit, no Indian Prime Minister had visited Seychelles for almost 34 years.
