General Mubeen appealed to the Taliban government to raise funds to build this dam. He said- This water is our blood and we cannot let our blood flow from our veins. We have to stop our water. This will meet our electricity needs and we will use in our farming and increase yields.

45mw electricity will be generated, 1.5 lakh acres will get water

Taliban’s Ministry of Water and Energy Spokesperson Matiullah Abid says that the survey and design of this dam has been prepared, but money is needed to make it.

The Taliban government claims that if this project is completed, it will generate 45 MW of electricity and about 1.5 lakh acres of farming will get water for irrigation. This will improve energy crisis and food security in Afghanistan.

There is no compromise in Pak-Afghan regarding Kunar River

The 480 km long Kunar river originates from the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan and meets the Kabul River near Jalalabad in Pakistan. This is an important water source of Pakistan.

There is no formal bilateral agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan regarding the water sharing of the Kabul River and its tributaries.

Pakistan has already expressed concern over Afghanistan’s dam projects, as this may reduce the supply of water coming in its area.

Water flow of Kabul River may decrease 16-17%

According to Pakistan media, the water flow of the Kabul river can decrease by up to 16-17% due to the formation of a dam on the Kunar river. This will have a major impact on Pakistan’s cultivation and water supply.

Pakistan is already under pressure due to the postponement of the Indus Water Treaty from India and the closure of the sluice gate of the dam on the Chenab river. In such a situation, if this dam is formed on the Kunar river, then its crisis will become more serious.

India has provided financial and technical assistance to projects like Mulberry and Salma Dam in Afghanistan. These projects are on the Kabul River and can affect water supply for Pakistan.

Jaishankar talked to Taliban Foreign Minister over phone

India Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar spoke to the Taliban Foreign Minister on the phone on 15 May. During this time, India discussed furthering the mulberry dam project on the Kabul River.

Mulberry Dam is a hydropower and irrigation project. For this, India is providing financial assistance of Rs 2020 crore ($ 236 million). This project will be completed in three years and will irrigate 4 thousand hectares of land, along with drinking water to 20 lakh people.

India and Afghanistan signed an agreement for the Mulberry Dam in February 2021. Earlier, India built the Salma Dam in Afghanistan in 2016, which was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi and the then Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

After the Pahalgam attack, India also sent a delegation to Afghanistan. The delegation discussed the mulberry dams and other projects to work fast.

PM Modi inaugurated Salma Dam in Afghanistan in 2016. This dam costing Rs 1,700 crore was made with the help of the Government of India.
