Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has accused India that he is taking revenge for Azerbaijan’s proximity to Pakistan on global forums.
He gave this statement on Monday to meet Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
According to reports, India rejected Azerbaijan’s claim for SCO membership. It is being described as the reason behind his proximity to Pakistan. In fact, during Operation Sindoor in May, Azerbaijan openly supported Pakistan.
Aliyev said that despite India’s attitude, his country gives priority to relations with Pakistan.
Pakistani PM Sharif thanked Azerbaijan during a military confrontation with India.
Azerbaijan supported Pakistan after Operation Sindoor
India carried out Operation Sindoor in Pakistan on the night of 6-7 May in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April. In this operation, India targeted 9 terrorist bases of Pakistan.
After the operation, Azerbaijan openly supported Pakistan and condemned India’s action. After the struggle with India stopped, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif also visited Azerbaijan.
He also thanked President Aliyev for support in military conflict with India. Along with Shahbaz, Army Chief Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Information Minister Ataullah Tarar also visited Azerbaijan.
To gather support against India, Sharif visited the Turkas and four countries including Iran between 25 and 30 May.
China supported Azerbaijan’s membership
China has supported Azerbaijan for SCO membership. On Monday, Chinese President Jinping held a bilateral meeting with Aliyev in the sideline of the SCO Summit on Monday.
During this, Jinping announced the support of Azerbaijan’s membership. Azerbaijan is currently the dialogue partner country of SCO.
SCO is a major Eurasian organization promoting regional security, economic cooperation and political coordination.
This includes full member countries like India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran.
India started participating in the SCO as an observer in 2005 and got full membership at the SCO summit in Astana, Kazakhstan on 12 June 2017.
How to get membership in SCO
To join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a country first has to join SCO as an observer or dialogue partner country.
Subsequently, the country has to formally apply for complete membership. It has to show a commitment to accept the rules and goals of SCO.
The current member countries of SCO (eg India, China, Russia, Pakistan etc.) check the application. They test the country’s regional stability, economic cooperation, security policies and his loyalty to the SCO’s charter.
The final decision on the application is taken at the SCO summit. For this, the consent of all member countries is necessary. If a single country opposed, membership may stop.
