There was a sudden big fall in the stock of a leading company in the Indian stock market. The share price of this company has reduced by more than half or by 63 percent on many trading platforms, but it was not a big fall. This was only due to a strategic change taken by the company.

Name of the company whose share prices suddenly fell so low? Anil Aggarwal The company is Vedanta. Vedanta’s share price fell 63 percent to Rs 289.50 on Thursday, whereas it had closed at Rs 773.60 a day earlier.

Why was there a decline of 63 percent?
Actually, under the leadership of Anil Aggarwal Vedanta Ltd. has been demerged. The company has separated many of its businesses. Today was its record date, due to which this share was down by 63 percent. Anyone who held Vedanta shares before the record date will be given one share for each of the demerged company.

With this demerger, four new companies will be formed, that is, Vedanta shareholders will be given one share in exchange for one share in each company. Four new companies – Vedanta Aluminum Metal Limited (VAML), Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), Malco Energy Limited (MEL) and Vedanta Iron and Steel Limited (VISL) are included. These will be listed in the stock market later.

Vedanta shares opened at Rs 289.50 on NSE on Thursday, showing a decline of 62.58 per cent from Wednesday’s closing price of Rs 773.60. The total market capitalization of the company stood at Rs 1.13 lakh crore. This decline was due to the reduction in the value of the company’s separated business.

Demerger was to happen on May 1
Vedanta had fixed the record date as Friday, May 1, 2026. However, due to Friday being a market holiday, the shares were demerged on Thursday, April 30, 2025. The last date to buy Vedanta shares to avail benefits on demerger was Wednesday, April 29.

What did the experts say?
ICICI Direct said that after the demerger, Vedanta’s share price is expected to change and it will trade between Rs 300-325 per share. The brokerage firm said that Vedanta will get most of its value from its stake in Hindustan Zinc. The firm also said that the remaining demerged companies are likely to be listed within 1-2 months of the record date.

All active derivatives contracts expired on April 29, and new contracts with new price fixes and lot sizes will be relaunched at 10am on April 30, Nuwama Alternative Research said. Nuvama further said that Vedanta will continue to be a part of Nifty Next 50, while other demerged entities will appear as dummies till the time of listing.
