A photograph of former British Ambassador Peter Mandelson has emerged in new files linked to American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In this, Mandelson is seen with a woman in only underwear and shirt, the woman is in a bathrobe. After the picture surfaced, Mandelson has resigned from PM Keir Starmer’s Labor Party. Mandelson said that he did not want to cause further embarrassment to the party, hence he was leaving the party membership. The new documents show bank records show Epstein made three separate payments totaling $75,000, each of $25,000, into accounts linked to Mandelson in 2003 and 2004. He was removed from his post in September last year after his old contacts with Epstein came to light. Commenting on Mandelson, Starmer said that he was removed from the ambassadorship only last year and now he does not want to say anything on this. On January 30, the US Justice Department made public nearly 3 million pages of documents, 2,000 videos and 1.8 lakh photographs related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. Mandelson had put pressure on the Finance Department at the behest of Epstein. The released documents have revealed an email in which Mandelson told Epstein in 2009 that he was lobbying the British government for tax on bankers’ bonuses. In a December 2009 email, Epstein asked Mandelson whether bankers’ bonuses could be taxed only on the cash portion. In response, Mandelson wrote that he was insisting that this should happen, but the Treasury was opposing it. This was when Mandelson was Business Secretary and Finance Minister Alistair Darling imposed a ‘super tax’ on big bank bonuses after the financial crisis. Following the global financial crisis, Darling announced on 9 December 2009 a 50% super tax on large bonuses (bonuses exceeding £25,000) received from banks. This tax had to be paid by the banks only. This email shows that in 2009 Epstein requested Mandelson to try to get the government to weaken the banker bonus tax and Mandelson said he was putting pressure on the Treasury Department. Opposition calls for investigation into Mandelson Following Mandelson’s resignation, a Labor Party spokesperson said the party takes all complaints seriously and will investigate as per the rules. At the same time, the opposition party has demanded an independent investigation into the appointment of Mandelson as Ambassador to America. A Conservative spokesman said that Mandelson had been completely disgraced, but Keir Starmer did not have the courage to expel him from the party and allowed him to resign on his own. He said Starmer and her chief of staff appointed Mandelson as ambassador despite her ties to Epstein and took no action even after the evidence mounted. Now, considering the poor decision-making ability of the Prime Minister, an independent inquiry is necessary. Mandelson’s husband’s name also appears in the Epstein files. The name of Mandelson’s (gay) Brazilian husband Reinaldo Avila da Silva (both married in 2023) also appears in these files. In 2009, when Epstein was released from prison, da Silva emailed Epstein asking for money to pay for an osteopathy course. Mandelson was a business secretary at the time and was in a relationship with da Silva. Da Silva sent bank details for £3,225 in fees and other expenses. Epstein promised to send the money immediately. Mandelson emailed Epstein asking him to show it as a loan to avoid gift taxes. A few days later, Da Silva thanked him and the money was credited to his account. Also in 2010, Epstein asked da Silva to send $13,000 and $2,000 every month. Mandelson apologized to the victimized women and girls. Mandelson and Epstein’s friendship began in 2002 and lasted until 2011. During this period, Mandelson was a cabinet minister in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Last September he was removed from his ambassadorship over a ‘birthday book’ message he wrote to Epstein, in which he called Epstein ‘my best pal’ and advised him to fight for an early release from prison. Flight records show Mandelson traveled on Epstein’s private jet ‘Lolita Express’ and stayed at his home in New York, Palm Beach and on a Caribbean island. In some old photographs, she is also seen in a bathrobe and swimming trunks. Mandelson issued a statement on Friday saying that it was wrong to trust Epstein after his conviction and that it was wrong to continue the friendship. He apologized unconditionally to the victimized women and girls. He said he was never involved or guilty of Epstein’s crimes and that the real truth came to light after his death. What is the full story of the Epstein case? It began in 2005 when the mother of a 14-year-old girl in Florida filed a complaint with the police. It said that his daughter was called to Epstein’s luxurious house on the pretext of ‘massage’, but after reaching there, she was pressurized for sex. When he returned home and told this to his parents, they immediately complained to the police. Then for the first time an official complaint was filed against Jeffrey Epstein. During the police investigation it came to light that this was not an isolated case. Gradually, about 50 minor girls were identified who made similar allegations against Epstein. The Palm Beach Police Department took this case seriously and investigated for several months. After this, a criminal investigation started against Epstein. The investigation into the case revealed that Epstein owned luxurious villas in Manhattan and Palm Beach. Epstein used to throw high-profile parties here, which were attended by many big personalities. Epstein used to bring underage girls to parties on his private jet ‘Lolita Express’. He used to force the girls by luring money and jewelery and threatening them. In this, Epstein’s girlfriend and partner Ghislaine Maxwell supported him. However, even after the initial investigation, Epstein was not jailed for long. His influence was so much that in 2008 he was sentenced to only 13 months, in which he could also work outside the jail. Who was Jeffrey Epstein? Jeffrey Epstein was a millionaire financier from New York. He was friends with big leaders and celebrities. He was accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2005. In 2008 he was convicted of soliciting sex from a minor. He was jailed for 13 months. In 2019, Jeffrey was arrested on sex trafficking charges. But before the trial he committed suicide in jail. His partner Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted of charges of helping him in 2021. She is serving a 20-year sentence.
