Hurricane Melissa is moving at a speed of 282 km/h.
Hurricane Melissa becomes the most powerful storm of 2025. It is moving towards the Caribbean country Jamaica. So far three people have died in Jamaica. Hurricane Melissa has already caused devastation in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Four people have lost their lives here.
American meteorologists have warned that this storm could prove devastating and deadly. The speed of Melissa has reached 175 miles per hour i.e. approximately 282 km/hour.
Due to this it has become a Category-5 hurricane. This is the most dangerous category of storms. According to the Meteorological Department, this storm may hit the coast of Jamaica on Tuesday morning (local time).

Risk of floods and landslides increased due to continuous rains
Due to the slow movement of Melissa, there is a possibility of continuous heavy rains. This has increased the risk of heavy floods and landslides.
America’s National Hurricane Center (NHC) has said that due to strong winds and low pressure, Melissa has become the most powerful storm in the world this year.
If the hurricane hits at this strength, it would be the most powerful hurricane to affect Jamaica since 1851.
The Jamaican government has issued evacuation orders for several areas, including the capital Kingston. 881 relief camps have been opened, where people are being given shelter. Jamaica’s Education Minister Dana Morris Dixon said,
We have never seen such a storm before. It has been raining since October, the ground is already wet, so the possibility of heavy floods and landslides is very high.
Government appealed to people to stay in their homes
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said,
Every Jamaican citizen should stay indoors and follow the orders of the administration. We will emerge from this crisis stronger.
US NHC Director Michael Brennan warned on Tuesday that strong winds and severe rain could lead to deadly floods and landslides. He also appealed to the people not to come out of their homes.
Due to the impact of the storm, water has entered hundreds of houses in Haiti and Dominican Republic. A 79-year-old man died in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, while a 13-year-old child is reported missing.
The impact of the storm will begin in Cuba by Tuesday night. Hurricane conditions will develop in the Bahamas on Wednesday. Strong winds and rain are also expected in the Turks and Caicos Islands from Wednesday.
