Sanjay Dutt has so far been seen in the films ‘Dhurandhar 2’, ‘The Raja Saheb’, ‘Aakhri Sawal’, ‘Raja Shivaji’, ‘KD – The Devil’ and ‘7 Dogs’ in 2026.
The year was 1994. An accused lodged in the highest security Anda Barrack of Mumbai’s Thane Central Jail was waiting for his sisters on the day of Rakshabandhan. Behind the iron bars, both the sisters tied Rakhi on his hand, but the brother’s pocket was completely empty. There was neither any gift nor money to give.
He remained silent for some moments. Then he placed the tea-snack coupons of two rupees each, which he got from the jail canteen, in the hands of the sisters and said, ‘This is what I have at the moment.’
This was the same person, in whose name crowds used to gather outside the theatres, whose posters of his films were visible in the cities and who was a superstar of crores of people, but times changed in such a way that the same actor could only give coupons of two rupees to his sisters within the walls of the jail.
Yes, we are talking about Bollywood’s ‘Sanju Baba’ i.e. Sanjay Dutt. Today, on his 67th birthday, let us know some of his unheard stories.
Sent to boarding school on the advice of Indira Gandhi
After the birth of Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Dutt and Nargis had asked for suggestions from the readers of film magazine ‘Shama’ for the name of their son. After which more than 15,000 names came from across the country. After this, the name ‘Sanjay’ was suggested by Pushpa Aggarwal, a resident of Agra.
Sanjay was the most loved one of the family since childhood. Parents, grandmother and relatives fulfilled his every wish. For this reason he was also becoming very stubborn. Be it school or home, he got special attention everywhere. However, Sanjay was not just stubborn, he also had a big heart. Once during a wedding in Delhi, he took off his suit and gave it to a poor child who was shivering from the cold.

But his mischiefs were also increasing the family’s worries. According to the book written on Sanjay Dutt by journalist Yasir Usman, at the age of six, he saw his father Sunil Dutt smoking cigarettes and started insisting on smoking cigarettes himself.
Sunil Dutt felt that his son’s interest would end once he smoked a cigarette, but Sanjay smoked the entire cigarette. A few years later, he was caught hiding in the garden and smoking the extinguished cigarette butts thrown by the guests. On which his father beat him.
In such a situation, Sunil Dutt realized that excessive pampering and the film environment was having a negative impact on Sanjay. Then it was decided that Sanjay should be sent to a boarding school. After this, the family’s close friend and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi advised that Sanjay be sent to Lawrence School in Sanawar, Himachal Pradesh for military discipline.

In 1980, the Indira Gandhi government nominated Nargis Dutt to the Rajya Sabha. At the same time, Sunil Dutt was elected Lok Sabha MP five times on Congress ticket.
Sanjay went to New York hiding heroin in his shoes
In 1980, Sanjay Dutt was busy shooting for his first film ‘Rocky’. During this time, his mother Nargis’s health deteriorated and she was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Nargis was suffering from pancreatic cancer and had to be taken to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York for treatment.
Sunil Dutt, in a trembling voice, told his three children Sanjay, Namrata and Priya that their mother has cancer. After this, the shooting of ‘Rocky’ was stopped and on 21 August 1980, Sunil Dutt left for America with Nargis.
Nargis underwent several surgeries during her treatment in New York, but after the operation, she went into a coma due to continuous bleeding. During this time, Sanjay Dutt himself was struggling with drug addiction. Despite his mother’s critical condition, he was not able to give up drugs.
According to Yasir Usman’s book, while going to New York, he had hidden about 30 grams of heroin in his shoes. Later he admitted that he felt ashamed remembering that incident. He was not even allowed to donate blood for his mother because of his addiction.

A chair was left empty in the memory of Nargis at the premiere of ‘Rocky’.
Nargis regained consciousness after being in a coma for about three months in New York. His biggest wish was to return to India soon and watch his son’s first film ‘Rocky’.
After returning to India on 6 March 1981, Sunil Dutt took him to the preview theater at home to watch the film ‘Rocky’ on 9 March 1981. Due to weakness she could not watch the entire film and had to be taken back to the room after watching only seven reels, but she was very happy with what she saw. He believed that his son Sanju would become a big star.
At the same time, the premiere of Sanjay’s debut film ‘Rocky’ was scheduled for 7 May 1981. Nargis died on 3 May 1981, just four days before the premiere. After this, during the premiere of the film, Sunil Dutt had kept the chair next to Sanjay Dutt in the theater vacant in the memory of Nargis.
Rishi Kapoor had come to beat Rajesh Khanna.
Sanjay Dutt and actress Tina Munim fell in love during the shooting of the film ‘Rocky’. Sanjay was a very possessive boyfriend in this relationship. Their affair lasted for about 2 years.
According to Yasir Usman’s book, Tina Munim was working with Rishi Kapoor in the film ‘Karz’. Then rumors of a love affair between the two had spread. This made Sanjay so angry that he reached Rishi Kapoor’s house with the intention of beating him.

Sanjay also asked actor Gulshan Grover to accompany him. Gulshan later told,
Sanjay and I were like brothers. One day he told me, ‘Let’s go to Chintu’s (Rishi Kapoor) house, we have to beat him.’ We also went there, but his fiancee Neetuji (Neetu Singh) explained to us that Chintu was not having any affair. After this we returned from there.

Later, after the shooting of the film ‘Sautan’, the news of the closeness of Tina Munim and Rajesh Khanna started spreading in the film industry. Later Sanjay admitted that he could not tolerate that Tina left him and went closer to someone else. After this, in anger he went straight to Mehboob Studio, where Rajesh Khanna was shooting.
Sanjay pulled a chair right in front of Rajesh Khanna and kept staring at him. Later Sanjay himself admitted that if Rajesh Khanna had said anything that day, he would have attacked him, but Rajesh Khanna remained silent and did not react. Eventually Sanjay returned from there.
There was a rumor of secret marriage of Sanjay Dutt and Rekha.
In the year 1982, rumors spread that Sanjay Dutt secretly married actress Rekha. In fact, the famous film magazine Cineblitz had written in its column ‘Rip Off’,
We have learned from our extremely reliable sources, who were present in the vicinity of Hotel Sea Rock, that Sanjay and Rekha spent the first few days of their alleged marriage together there. If you are wondering why no one saw them in the hotel, then remember that there is also a facility like ‘room service’.

The magazine further wrote,
Sanjay Dutt is bursting with happiness these days. His own ‘poet’ Rekha is writing small love poems for him, ‘You are my strength, my support, my sweetest flower.’

According to Yasir Usman’s book, these news created a sensation in the film industry. However, both Sanjay Dutt and Rekha rejected these claims outright. In an interview, Sanjay had clearly said that I have no relation with Rekha. The news of my marriage is a complete conspiracy and lie. Even the story of my so-called secret marriage was fabricated.

Sanjay Dutt and Rekha worked prominently in the 1984 film Zameen Aasman.
Sanjay had said that in some reports it was even written that 15 days after the marriage, he took Rekha to get blessings from his father Sunil Dutt, but Sunil Dutt threw her out of the house.
Sanjay had termed all these claims as fabricated and said that he never married Rekha. He also said that he does not understand why his name is being linked with Rekha, even though he knows that Rekha is related to a big personality in the film industry.
Sanjay believed that this rumor spread because he could not go to meet Amitabh Bachchan who was hospitalized at that time.

The sisters were given coupons of two rupees each in jail.
The year was 1994 and the month was July. Sanjay Dutt’s interim bail in the illegal arms possession case was canceled by the court and he was sent to Thane Central Jail. He was kept in the most heavily guarded Anda Barrack of the jail. This was the same place where dangerous criminals and TADA accused were kept.
In that small room of about 10×10 feet, neither sunlight nor the outside world was visible. A small bulb, a mattress and a toilet without a flush in the corner.
Sanjay Dutt later told that for the first one and a half months he was not even allowed to meet other prisoners. The loneliness increased so much that he started watching ants walking for hours to pass the time.
Outside, father Sunil Dutt was continuously making rounds of politicians, lawyers and officials for his son’s bail. Sisters Priya and Namrata also visited the jail regularly, but were often able to see Sanjay only from a distance.
At the same time, on Rakshabandhan, the sisters tied Rakhi to him in jail. At that time Sanjay had no gift to give. He gave only two rupees worth tea and breakfast coupons from the jail canteen to his sisters and said, ‘This is all I have at the moment.’

Had said on daughter’s acting – I will break her legs
Sanjay Dutt’s elder daughter Trishala Dutt was born in 1988 to his first wife Richa Sharma. When she was just 8 years old, her mother passed away due to a brain tumor. After this he was raised by his maternal grandparents in New York. Trishala once wanted to become an actress in Bollywood, but Sanjay Dutt was strictly against it.
During the promotion of the film ‘Bhoomi’ in 2016, he had said, ‘Trishala wanted to become an actress and I wanted to break her legs.’
Sanjay Dutt had also said, ‘I have invested a lot of my time and energy in sending her to a good college. She has specialized in forensic science and I think it is a great career.

Trishala Dutt was born on 10 August 1988.

Salman’s BMW key was thrown into the sea
The friendship between Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan is considered an example in Bollywood. However, there was a time when Sanjay Dutt got angry with Salman. This story was revealed by Salman himself in Rajat Sharma’s show.
Salman had told that Sanjay Dutt had made a guest appearance in Sohail Khan’s film ‘Maine Dil Tujhko Diya’ for the sake of friendship. After completion of the shooting, Sanjay Dutt reached Salman’s house, where the party was going on. During the same time, Salman got a new BMW M5. He took Sanjay Dutt outside and said, ‘Baba, this is the country’s first BMW M5 and I want you to have it.’
On hearing this, Sanjay Dutt thanked Salman, but the next moment he picked up the car keys and threw them straight into the sea. The key went into the sea and because there was only one key to the car, it remained parked outside the house for several days. Salman had told that it took four days to find that key.

Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan have mainly worked together in the films ‘Saajan’ (1991) and ‘Chal Mere Bhai’ (2000).
