Ukraine has said it has attacked a major Russian oil refinery with British Storm Shadow missiles. According to the Ukrainian Army, this attack was carried out on the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery located in Rostov area of Russia.
The General Staff of Ukraine said that there were several powerful explosions in the refinery. Officials said the refinery was a major supplier of oil products to southern Russia and supplied diesel and jet fuel to the Russian military for use in the war against Ukraine.
Last year, Britain gave Ukraine permission to use Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia. After this, these missiles were attacked for the first time in November.
Apart from this, Ukraine has also targeted Russia’s energy bases with its long-range drones. These drone strikes hit oil tanks at Temryuk port in the Krasnodar region and a gas processing plant in Orenburg.
This plant in Orenburg is about 1,400 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border. Russian officials said two oil tanks caught fire after a drone strike at Temryuk port.
In the last few months, both Ukraine and Russia have increased attacks on each other’s energy targets. Since August, Ukraine has begun targeting Russia’s oil refineries and energy infrastructure in an effort to damage Russia’s oil revenues, which form the bulk of its war spending.
