Three Qatari diplomats were killed and two others were injured in a car crash on Sunday near the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh.
According to security sources, the diplomats’ car overturned at a turn around 50 kilometers from the city. The incident occurred a day before talks to be held on Monday to finalize the Gaza Peace Plan agreement.
However, it was not immediately clear whether the dead diplomats were part of the Qatari negotiating team that struck a deal with Egyptian officials this week for the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan.
The summit will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and US President Donald Trump. According to a statement issued on Saturday, leaders of more than 20 countries will participate in this conference.
Its purpose is to end the war in Gaza, promote peace and stability in the Middle East, and bring regional security. However, Hamas has announced that it will not attend the official signing ceremony of the Gaza peace agreement in Egypt.
A senior Hamas leader has expressed disagreement with parts of Trump’s plan. According to a report by The Times of Israel, Hamas leaders rejected the proposal for their members to leave Gaza as “absurd”.
Trump announced on Wednesday that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of his 20-point plan, which was unveiled on September 29. The plan aims for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the release of all Israeli hostages, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces.
The first phase came into effect at 12 noon local time (0900 GMT) on Friday. The second phase of the plan is to establish a new regime in Gaza, create a security force composed of Palestinian personnel and soldiers from Arab-Islamic countries, and ensure the disarmament of Hamas.
