The Duma, the Russian parliament, has approved a defense budget of Rs 10 lakh 67 thousand crore ($126 billion) for the year 2025. Which is about 32.5% of the total government expenditure. According to CNN, this amount is Rs 2 lakh 37 thousand crore ($28 billion) more than last year’s defense budget.
This new three-year budget also estimates a slight cut in military spending for the years 2026 and 2027. The budget has been approved by both houses of the Duma.
Russia has continuously increased its defense budget for the last two years. Its impact is also visible on the Russian economy. Inflation is very high in the country and companies are facing labor shortage. To handle the situation, the Russian Central Bank increased interest rates to 21% in October, which is the highest in ten years.
Russia is short of new soldiers, Ukraine is getting help
Due to the war, pressure on Russia’s economy and population is continuously increasing. Despite having a larger population than Ukraine, Russia is facing difficulty in recruiting new soldiers.
On the other hand, Ukraine is continuously receiving economic and strategic help from western countries. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday announced to provide military equipment worth about Rs 5 thousand crore ($684 million) to Ukraine.
In Russia, new soldiers are being promised a salary of Rs 49 lakh in the first year of joining.

This Russia-Ukraine war is the biggest conflict in Europe after the Second World War. Moscow has an advantage on many fronts, but in August Ukraine suddenly attacked in Kursk and captured large areas of Russia. However, now Russia has taken back 40% of the land from Ukrainian occupation.
