Bittu challenged ‘Sutlej’ film makers

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu had said about Diljit Dosanjh’s film ‘Sutlej’ that the film shows only a one-sided story of the period of insurgency in Punjab. According to him, Punjab deserves the whole truth and not half the story.

Challenging the filmmakers, it was said that if the film claims 25,000 people are missing or illegal cremations are being carried out, then official records or documents should be presented in support of it, otherwise it should be made clear that this number is not officially verified.

Bittu also targeted Diljit Dosanjh, calling him an impostor and said that his objection was more about the narrative and public presentation of the film than about it. He also reiterated that the government does not have direct control over the content of OTT platforms. The government had banned this film in India on the second day of its release on OTT.

Inherited Beant Singh, rebelled against Congress

Ravneet Singh Bittu is the third generation face of the Beant Singh family in Punjab politics. Being the grandson of former CM Beant Singh, he inherited the Congress from the beginning. In 2009, he entered national politics by reaching Lok Sabha from Anandpur Sahib. After this, he maintained his hold by winning from Ludhiana seat in 2014 and 2019.

While in Congress, Bittu was counted among the aggressive and vocal leaders of the party. He kept expressing his views openly on farmers’ movement, law and order and issues related to Punjab. In 2021, he was also made the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, but amid the internal strife and leadership disputes of the Punjab Congress, his disillusionment with the party increased.

Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Bittu left Congress and joined BJP. This move was considered a major change in Punjab politics, as the BJP got a strong Jatt Sikh face for the first time. Although he lost the Ludhiana Lok Sabha elections, the BJP expressed confidence in him and made him a minister in the central government.
