When going to watch David Dhawan’s films, the audience looks for laughter, not logic. Misunderstandings, relationship chaos, hustle and bustle and a lot of chaos have been the hallmark of his films. Hai Jawaani To Ishq Hona Hai is also a film of the same school. Here, more emphasis is placed on the situations than on the story, which gradually become so absurd that the viewer either laughs or sits holding his head. There are some good moments of entertainment in the film, but one has to wait for a long time to get them. Story of the film: Jas is a happy-go-lucky but very energetic person. His wife Bani loves him, but is unable to keep pace with his needs and thinking. Jas wants to become a father, while Bani is fed up with his haste and the ever-increasing pressure. Things get so bad that she decides to divorce Jas. Preet enters Jas’s life in an attempt to get out of the broken relationship. The two grow closer and Jas feels that life is back on track. But where are things so easy in David Dhawan’s film? The real mess begins when both Bani and Preet become pregnant and Jas turns out to be the father of both their children. After this the film moves forward entirely based on misunderstandings, lies, cover-ups and ridiculous situations arising one after another. There is more confusion in the story than strength and this is its biggest entertainment and also its biggest weakness. Varun Dhawan’s acting in the film is the biggest strength of this film. Seeing him many times reminds me of his old comic avatar. He has played the character of running away, hiding, lying and then getting badly trapped in the same lie with full energy. Whenever the pace of the film slows down, Varun tries to manage it with his presence. Mrunal Thakur doesn’t get much to do, but she plays her character with dignity. As Bani, she sometimes seems to be the most intelligent person in the story. Pooja Hegde’s character brings a big twist in the story. She looks attractive on screen and her chemistry with Varun also goes well. However, the script limits them to just increasing the confusion of the story. Wherever Manish Paul is seen, he gives a reason to smile. The only regret is that he did not get much screen time. Jimmy Shergill impresses with his serious style and Mouni Roy’s small role creates some good comic moments. In the direction and technical aspects of the film, David Dhawan is seen in his old form. They know the audience is not here to watch serious cinema. That’s why he keeps the film in complete entertainment mode from the beginning. The problem is that the first half of the film is extremely slow. Many jokes do not leave any impact and many scenes seem as if they have been kept just to increase the time. After the interval, the story picks up pace and some situations really succeed in making one laugh. Some one-liners in Farhad Samji’s dialogues are good and at many places there is laughter in the theatre. But the toilet humor, body jokes and some old-fashioned comedy scenes feel stale in today’s times. Technically the film looks colorful and gorgeous. The London locations, glossy frames and big sets look great on screen. But the editing is quite loose. This film, which is more than two and a half hours long, becomes the enemy of its own pace at many places. Music in the film Music is one of the weak links of the film. There is no new song that is remembered for a long time. Chunari Chunari leaves the biggest impact, but the reason for that is not new music but old memories. The background score tries to maintain the energy of the film, but fails to do wonders. The final verdict on the film is Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is a film that doesn’t expect you to think too much. It hinges entirely on chaos, misunderstandings and Varun Dhawan’s comic timing. The first half is weak, the film is longer than necessary and many of the jokes feel old. But some good comic moments in the second half and Varun’s energy do not let the film completely fall apart. If you are a fan of David Dhawan style light comedy then the film can make you laugh at some places. But if you go with the hope of a strong story or new thinking, you may return disappointed.
