Robotic guards deployed in water for the safety of North Eastern Railway Bridge
For the safety of railway bridges in North-East India, NF Railways has for the first time deployed Underwater Robotic Vehicles (ROVs), which are going to the river bed and deeply examining the foundations, footings and structure of the bridges. It started with the Saraighat rail-cum-road bridge, where robots conducted high-resolution imaging, 3D mapping and structural strength analysis beneath the Brahmaputra.
These include 3D models from ROV Lidar, thermal imaging, soil-rock investigation from GPR and measurement of concrete strength from UPV. So far, 13 bridges have been found safe and the target is to inspect 34 bridges in 2025-26.
