The letter has signatures of 61 personalities from India and 56 from Pakistan.
To improve relations between India and Pakistan, 117 personalities from both the countries have written letters to PM Modi and Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif.
In this, both the Prime Ministers have been asked to choose the path of dialogue and not confrontation, so that an environment of peace and development can be created in South Asia.
It has been written in the letter that due to continuous tension, the future of the common people and especially the youth of both the countries is being affected. These 117 personalities include former officials, social and political figures.
From the Indian side, 61 people including former Jammu and Kashmir CM Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq and RJD MP Manoj Jha have signed the letter.
From Pakistan side, 56 people including former Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri have supported it.

In the year 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi suddenly reached Pakistan while returning from Kabul tour. Here he attended the wedding of the granddaughter of the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
1. Dialogue between the two countries should be restarted Current status: On 25 December 2015, PM Narendra Modi went to Lahore and met Nawaz Sharif. Subsequently, comprehensive bilateral talks almost came to a standstill after the Pathankot terrorist attack on January 2, 2016.
2. There should be talks on all disputed issues including Jammu and Kashmir Current status: On 5 August 2019, India removed Article 370. After this, Pakistan limited bilateral talks and diplomatic relations.
3. Military tension should be reduced Current status: On 25 February 2021, both countries agreed to again adhere to the 2003 ceasefire agreement on the LoC. Despite this, tension remains after the recent terrorist incidents.
4. Increase in people-to-people contacts Current situation: After the Pahalgam terrorist attack on 22 April 2025, both the countries imposed strict restrictions on the movement of citizens and the visa service was stopped.
5. Cultural and educational relations should be improved Current situation: After 18 September 2016 (Uri attack) the exchange of artists and most of the cultural programs almost stopped. Cooperation between universities is also very limited.
6. Bilateral series of cricket and other sports should start Current status: The last bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan was played in 2012–13. After this, both the teams have met only in tournaments like ICC and Asia Cup.
7. Air service should start between the two countries Current status: After April 24, 2025, both countries closed their airspace to each other’s aircraft. Since then direct flights have been closed.
8. Visa process should be easy Current status: Most visa services were suspended after 24 April 2025 and many citizens had to return.
9. High Commissioner should be re-appointed Current status: After the removal of Article 370 in August 2019, Pakistan recalled its High Commissioner. India had also recalled its High Commissioner. Since then both countries have not had full-time High Commissioners.
10. Bus service, Kartarpur corridor and Attari-Wagah border should be reopened. Current status: Samjhauta Express and Thar Express are closed since August 2019. Delhi-Lahore bus service is also closed. Normal civilian movement through the Attari-Wagah border is affected from April 2025. The Kartarpur corridor, which opened on 9 November 2019, has been affected several times due to recent tensions.
11. Start business again Current status: On 9 August 2019, Pakistan suspended bilateral trade with India. Since then, normal trade has almost stopped except for limited items.
Why was this letter written?
This initiative has been taken at a time when relations between India and Pakistan have been tense in recent months. They say that the ever-increasing hostility is affecting the development, regional stability and interests of common citizens of both the countries.
