Building collapsed in Satya Niketan, Delhi on Sunday 1:30 PM.
Supreme Court will hear the PG incident in Delhi’s Satya Niketan today. During the hearing on September 8, the court had said that the matter will not be limited to Delhi only, but the condition of dilapidated and illegal buildings across the country will be reviewed.
Earlier, this matter was heard by Delhi High Court on 7 September. The High Court had said that both Delhi Municipal Corporation and Delhi University are responsible for the accident.
The court has sought reply from MCD, Delhi Government, Central Government, NHRC and Delhi University within 10 days.
After this, on Wednesday the CM has also instructed MCD to investigate illegal PG hostels. MCD has started demolishing the buildings near the PG building. Girls PG was in these buildings. Girls are vacating PG and shifting to another place.
On September 6, 7 people died when a five-storey PG building collapsed in Satya Niketan. Till Wednesday, 5 people have been arrested in the case.
The buildings near the building that collapsed on September 6 are being demolished.
PG owner, operator and labor contractor arrested
Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested a youth named Sudhanshu in the PG accident. He was running a PG named Hostel Days in the building. His partner Shubham Tyagi is absconding. Both of them had taken the building on lease in August 2025.
Earlier, building owner Hariram Bansal, his wife Urmila, son Mahesh and labor contractor Sanoj have been arrested. Hariram Bansal, his wife Urmila and son Mahesh were produced in Patiala House Court on Monday night.
Accused Mahesh, PG operator Sudhanshu and labor contractor Sanoj will be presented in the court today.
Justice Bhavya Kharal sent Hariram and Urmila to 14-day judicial custody, while Mahesh got 2-day police custody. During police remand, Mahesh told that on the complaint of the PG running company, repairs were being done to remove the problem of accumulated water and dampness in the basement.
After removing water from the basement, a power trowel machine was also being run during the construction work. Police suspect that the building collapsed due to the vibration generated by the machine and its already weak structure.
Hariram Bansal is a retired Air Force sergeant.
Contractor said- It was installed for renovation 10 days ago
During interrogation, contractor Sanoj told that Mahesh Gupta had hired him for renovation 10 days ago. He used to get Rs 2800 daily. The work was to level the basement at par with the ground floor, for which about 3 trucks of debris were filled in the basement.
A wall was obstructing the shop space on the ground floor. That wall was removed to make space on the day of the accident. As soon as the wall was removed, the weak building could not bear the load and collapsed.
Students are withdrawing PG from Satya Niketan
Satya Niketan area was established between 1965-70 for the rehabilitation of slum dwellers. The number of students here increased after the South Campus was opened in the 1970s.
5 officers of MCD South Zone suspended
After the Satya Niketan accident, MCD suspended South Zone Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar on Monday. Along with him, four engineering officers have also been suspended till the completion of departmental action.
After this, IAS officer Shashwat Saurabh has been given additional charge of South Zone of MCD. Saurabh, a 2016 batch IAS officer of AGMUT cadre, is currently the Deputy Commissioner of South West Zone.
