Veteran Hindi cinema actor Dharmendra (89) died on Monday morning at his home in Juhu. He was unwell for a long time and was undergoing treatment. His last rites were performed at Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai on Monday afternoon. The film Sholay has been one of the biggest hits of Dharmendra’s career. This film was written by Salim-Javed. After the demise of Dharmendra, Javed Akhtar of Salim-Javed duo expressed grief while talking to Dainik Bhaskar and shared the memories associated with him.
Film writer Javed Akhtar told about Dharmendra that he first met Dharmendra during the film ‘Yakeen’. One day I reached Filmistan with director Brij and producer Devendra Verma. There Sadhna and Dharmendra were shooting for ‘Yeh Dil Deewana Hai’. I was an assistant earning Rs 175 per month, but I still remember the intimacy with which such a big star talked to a new boy like me. His house in Mumbai was always open – like a place in Punjab, where the village soil was breathing.

Dharmendra worked in films like Sholay and Yaadon Ki Baaraat written by Salim-Javed.
Javed Akhtar further said that he was the bridge of that closeness, with the help of which the entire film industry felt like a family. He loved Urdu and poetry. The main man of the screen Dharmendra was of poetic nature. This is his couplet, which tells the truth of life in two lines – Life is nothing even after getting everything, I have seen many Alexanders leaving empty handed.
Regarding Dharmendra’s personality, Javed told that Dharmendra ji’s personality was always seen in two layers – hard from outside, very soft from inside. Once he was doing a double role in a film. In one scene he was in pain because of blue contact lenses. I gave him the wrong page of dialogue. He became so angry that he threw the papers in frustration. I thought I would get scolded, but after some time she called me to the make-up room and apologized.
Dharmendra was crazy about Urdu Javed Akhtar told that Dharmendra had deep love for Urdu language and poetry. He said, “He used to read and write his dialogues in Urdu. He was very fond of poetry. When my book was published, he took Shabana’s autograph for it. He had a deep love for Urdu literature and poetry. Dharam ji himself used to recite ghazals often.”
