Earlier in June 2021, Modi had called Kamala. He thanked Kamala for helping Indians living in America.

Kamala Harris told PM Modi during her visit to the US in September 2021 that India needs to protect democracy and human rights.

Kamala VS Trump: Who is better for India?

Regarding giving visa to Indians- Trump had banned H-1B, better expected from Kamala Kamala Harris’s stance on visa policies is more flexible than Trump’s. People from India who go to America in search of jobs need H-1B visa. Trump has always been against such visas. He calls it bad for the American people. Trump had banned H-1B during his presidential rule.

On the other hand, Kamala Harris has a soft stand on the visa issue. She wants that America should provide as many visas as required to any country so that immigrants can stay in America. In this regard, Kamala Harris is better for Indians.

This is the reason why 55% of the Indians in America are supporters of the Democratic Party. Whereas, only 25% of the Indians are considered supporters of the Republican Party.

In the matter of trade – Trump removed India from the category of special business partner On the issue of trade, the Trump government is more harmful for India. Trump is in favor of making imports expensive and promoting American exports. This can harm India. During Trump’s tenure, there were many occasions of dispute between India and America on the issue of trade.

Trump had removed India from the category of Special Business Partner in his first term. A country included in this category can sell about 2 thousand products in America without any tax. But Trump said that India takes wrong advantage of this system. India itself wants to pay less tax but collects more tax from American companies.

In July 2024, Trump said in an election rally that India had imposed a 200% tariff on Harley Davidson. Due to the tariff, the bike became expensive. Therefore, the American company could not sell its bike there. Trump said that they want foreign companies in their country but impose expensive tariffs on their products. Democrats are more correct about trade deficit and tariffs.

Internal politics of India- The Biden administration has made the Indian government uncomfortable on several occasions by commenting on India’s internal politics. The Trump administration’s record in this matter has been good.

Human rights and the Kashmir issue

Kamala Harris’s stand on Kashmir and human rights issue does not match with India. Kamala had given a statement on the removal of Article 370 and the questions related to human rights in Kashmir after that. She had also criticized the Modi government.

After the removal of Article 370 in October 2019, Harris had said, “We have to remind Kashmiris that they are not alone in the world. We are monitoring the situation. If the situation changes, there will be a need to intervene.”

However, Kamala Harris’s stance has changed after becoming the Vice President. She has never made any statement that would make the Indian government uncomfortable.

Democratic Party and Kamala Harris’ stand on immigrants The Democratic Party is also known for its lax stance on illegal immigration. The party is criticized for this. However, Kamala Harris advocates strict laws on immigration. Kamala alleges that the Republican government does not want any solution to be found.

In fact, thousands of people are entering America illegally every day. They make their living in America by doing small jobs or labour. American industrialists need cheap labour to run factories. If illegal immigration stops, they will not get cheap labour.

On the other hand, if immigration is legalized, then these workers will have to be paid wages as per government rules. This will reduce the profits of business companies. This is the reason why most industrialists put pressure on the government not to change the existing system. This is the reason why most industrialists are in support of the Democratic Party and are also giving them more donations.

Immigration has become a major issue in the US presidential elections.

Who is better to counter China, Kamala or Trump? Priyanka Singh of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis says that America considers China to be the biggest threat. In such a situation, whichever party is in power, it will deal with China in the same way as it has been doing. Trump is more vocal so he will keep making many statements about China but at the government level, both the parties will have the same attitude towards China.

The Biden administration has imposed tariffs up to 100% on things like Chinese EV, semiconductors, batteries, solar cells, steel. India can benefit from this. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to bring the semiconductor industry to India.

In the last few years, economic, military or diplomatic relations between India and America have progressed a lot.

The next President, whichever party he belongs to, will take this further. Now there will be no break in this. There will be issues on some matters but this will not affect the relations between the two countries. Still, there are some issues on which differences can be seen between the two administrations. It is very unlikely that India will openly support any one candidate.
