When Rajkumar Hirani’s name is associated with any project, it is natural for expectations to increase. If there are actors like Arshad Warsi, Vikrant Massey, Boman Irani and Mona Singh, the hope of a great crime-comedy becomes stronger. Released on JioHotstar, ‘Pritam & Pedro’ tries to present the contemporary subject of cyber crime with comedy, thrill and emotion. The concept is interesting and the star cast is strong, but due to the weak screenplay and slow pace, the series does not reach its full potential. Dainik Bhaskar has given this series of 6 episodes 2.5 out of 5 stars. How is the story of the series? The story of ‘Pritam and Pedro’ is set in Goa. Pedro Gonsalves (Arshad Warsi) is an experienced police officer with old ideas, who is an expert in catching criminals, but he is not very friendly with technology and cyber world. After an incident, he is transferred to the cyber cell, where he meets a young and tech-savvy officer Pritam Parker (Veer Hirani). The working style of both is completely different. Pedro relies on experience and ground investigation, while Pritam solves crimes through data, hacking and digital technology. Meanwhile, he gets the responsibility of kidnapping the minister’s son and solving a high-profile cyber crime. As the investigation unfolds, layers of online fraud, hacking and digital scams are revealed, while the personal lives and emotional struggles of both the characters are also added to the story. How is the acting of the star cast? Arshad Warsi is the biggest strength of the entire series. His effortless acting, brilliant comic timing and screen presence handle even the weakest scenes. Rajkumar Hirani’s son Veer Hirani is debuting as a lead actor with this series. He has played the character honestly. He shows confidence in many scenes, but lacks experience in the emotional parts. His performance is satisfactory from the beginning. Vikrant Massey makes an impact even in limited screen time. Mona Singh, Boman Irani, Satyadeep Mishra and Shruti Marathe do justice to their characters, but the script does not give them much opportunity. How is the direction and technical side? Director Avinash Arun has previously given great works like ‘Three of Us’ and ‘Paatal Lok’. In such a situation, the expectations from him were high, but this time he was not completely successful in maintaining the grip of the story. The light humor and human touch of Rajkumar Hirani’s films is definitely visible in the direction. However, the biggest weakness is its writing and screenplay. The story, written by Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi, Suyyash Trivedi and Amit Dubey, has a relatable theme, but many episodes feel unnecessarily long. The thrill is not sustained and the emotional scenes also do not leave the desired impact. The series remains entertaining till the end, but does not become memorable. Technically the series is strong. The Goa locations, cinematography, camera work and production values impress. The visuals related to cyber crime also look believable, but the strong technical aspect does not compensate for the weak writing. How is the music? Music has always played an important role in Rajkumar Hirani’s projects. Some songs have also been included in ‘Pritam and Pedro’. Music by Shantanu Moitra and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire go well with the story. The retro style song in Shreya Ghoshal’s voice sounds good, but no song is remembered for long. The background score creates suspense at many places, but due to the slow pace of the story and weak thrill, its impact remains limited. Final Verdict: To watch or not? If you are a fan of Arshad Warsi or want to watch a light-hearted series on cyber crime, then you can watch ‘Pritam and Pedro’ once. But if you expect strong writing, deep emotions and memorable entertainment like his films from the name of Rajkumar Hirani, then this series may disappoint.
