The Canadian government has taken the first major action against extortion gangs targeting Punjabi businessmen of Indian origin. The Canada Border Security Agency (CBSA) has deported three foreign nationals linked to organized crime networks in the province of British Columbia. This action has been taken by the newly formed BC Extortion Task Force, which is working in coordination with the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), local police and CBSA.
Canada According to the Border Security Agency statement, these three civilians were involved in incidents of extortion, firing and violence and were mainly targeting business owners of Punjabi origin in the Lower Mainland area. The agency has also identified 78 other foreign nationals against whom immigration investigation has been initiated on suspicion of illegal activities related to organized crime. For many of these, no entry can be declared in Canada. However, the identity and nationality of the deported foreign nationals have been kept confidential.
65 incidents of extortion in Surrey this year
This year there has been a huge increase in incidents of extortion in British Columbia. According to Surrey Police, 65 cases of extortion were registered in Surrey alone in 2025, out of which 35 involved firing incidents. Criminals demand extortion in cryptocurrency through social media and resort to violence when refused. Many of these incidents are related to Indian gangs. According to sources, the role of syndicates like Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldie Brar and Rohit Godara is important. The Canadian government had recently declared Lawrence Bishnoi Gang as a foreign terrorist organization, but the criminal activities of its members have not stopped.
In areas like Brampton, Ontario, where a large number of Indian immigrants live, the incidents of these gangs have increased. Recently, Indian-origin businessman Darshan Singh Sasi was murdered in Abbotsford, British Columbia, for which the Lawrence Bishnoi gang took responsibility. Similarly, there was firing at the cafe-restaurant of stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma in Surrey. These incidents have spread panic among the migrant community.
The BC Extortion Task Force was formed in September this year, which includes 40 members. This task force is focusing on intelligence sharing and law enforcement to break the international extortion network. Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger said, ‘Those who threaten people with violence and extortion will be arrested and, if they are not Canadian citizens, they will be deported.’ The RCMP’s National Coordination and Support Team (NCST) is also coordinating in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.
