Both the actors also talked about the film’s philosophy, shooting experience and the social impact of cinema. Question: You are an IPS officer, so how did you decide to enter films? How was this film offered to you? Answer/Simala Prasad: I have done theater before and played some roles. The film was to be shot in Madhya Pradesh and featured the character of a police officer. The film is inspired by true events and raises a major social issue. I found its story and presentation attractive. So I decided to be a part of it. Question: Did your real life experiences help you in playing this character? Answer/Simala Prasad: Real life and playing a character are different things. In real life I am an IPS officer, but the character in the film has his own journey and emotions. He has his own dreams, struggles and experiences. Understanding what she has gone through and why she reacts the way she does to certain situations was the biggest challenge for me. Question: Both police service and acting are challenging fields. Which did you feel most challenged by? Answer/Simala Prasad: Every work is challenging in itself. Every field requires hard work, study and preparation. As a police officer, every day brings new challenges. Whereas as an actress, you have to play the character of a person whose life you have never lived. Therefore preparation and dedication is necessary in both the areas. Question: How was the experience of working with an experienced actor like Mukesh Tiwari? Answer/Simala Prasad: Naturally there was nervousness in the beginning. Preparations were complete, but there was uncertainty regarding the shooting. After the shooting started, there was a lot of cooperation from the co-stars. His positive attitude and support helped in better performance. Question: Mukesh ji, you have played many memorable characters. What is there in this film that will surprise the audience? Answer (Mukesh Tiwari): In this film I did not make any effort to surprise the audience. The character that was written was played with simplicity and honesty. Did not put the burden of his experience or stardom on the character. Tried to understand the character and present it truthfully. Question: When you got the film offer, what was the first thing that impressed you? Answer/Mukesh Tiwari: I was impressed by its story. It does not glorify anyone’s suffering, but shows a journey. The film is not judgmental. In this many stories run together and finally meet at one point. This is its beauty. Question: When you came to know that IPS officer Simla Prasad is also acting in the film, what was your reaction? Answer/Mukesh Tiwari: We met during the shooting. Initially there was a question in the mind that how will an IPS officer act. This was a natural reaction. After working together my opinion changed. She was always ready to learn and was acting with ease. Later I felt that it was my mistake to judge him first. Question: Do you think that ‘The Narmada Story’ will not only entertain but also start a social dialogue? Answer/Mukesh Tiwari: Entertainment and dialogue are not opposed to each other. The film doesn’t try to lecture or burden the audience. This is a story, which has been presented in natural colors. A serious story also has its own entertainment. The audience will see it as a sensitive and honest story. Question: There is a lot of discussion about method acting. How do you see it? Answer/Mukesh Tiwari: Method acting is not a formula but a process of practice. Just like a singer practices and a dancer practices, an actor also prepares in the same way. Every artist has his own method. Mere preparation is not enough, in the end one also has to perform with craft. Question: Simla ji, how did you prepare for your character? Answer/Simla Prasad: First of all I understood the script. Then talk to the director and writer to know the background of the character. I tried to understand what would be the nature and thinking of a girl coming from such an environment. Tried to understand and play the character on this basis. Question: Which was the moment during the shooting which you still remember? Answer/Simala Prasad: There are many such moments, but the lockup scene will always be remembered. During interrogation, Mukesh ji gets slapped hard. After the scene, there was silence on the entire set for a few moments. Everyone had stopped. That moment was quite impressive. Question: Being a female IPS officer, do you think cinema can bring change in the society? Answer/Simala Prasad: Absolutely. Cinema is a powerful medium. Its biggest strength is that it reaches a large number of people in audio-visual form. Many times the things seen on the screen get registered more deeply in our minds. Therefore, the impact of cinema on society is huge.
