Shabana Azmi has said in a recent interview that she and Javed Akhtar get hatred from every section of Hindu and Muslim. He said that many times fatwas were imposed on him and sometimes he was even called a terrorist.

Shabana Azmi has said in an interview given to Zoom, ‘It is to the credit of both Javed and I that both of us are unable to tolerate those who are part of the intolerant community. Both Hindu fundamentalists and Muslim fundamentalists. Then we feel that our secular thinking is proved.

Shabana Azmi further said, ‘Sometimes the Maulvi is giving us a fatwa, sometimes someone is calling us terrorists. I feel that we have to rise above the Hindu-Muslim narrative. And I think there is only one way in which this can happen, that is, when we are pushed into the Hindu-Muslim conflict, we do not get entangled in it. This fight should not be between Hindus and Muslims but between people with liberal and fundamentalist interests. Liberal Hindu and Liberal Muslim should be together and intolerant Hindu-Muslim should be together. In this way, the poison of religion will come out from within us.

Shabana said – Sunny became a Muslim, that’s why Partition 1947 flopped, director opposed

Shabana Azmi has recently said that her Sunny Deol starrer film Bantwara 1947 flopped because people could not see Sunny Deol in the role of a Muslim man.

The film’s director Rajkumar Santoshi opposed it. He said in an interview to Variety India, “I don’t understand the meaning of this. Amitabh Bachchan played the role of a Muslim hero in ‘Coolie’ (1983). Many of Manmohan Desai’s films had Muslim heroes.”

He further said, “Have we reached such a stage where we cannot accept heroes from other communities? We are intelligent, good and educated people. How are they saying that there is a big mistake in the film?”

Said- I want to adopt good things of every religion

Prince Santoshi said, “I am a Hindu. I go to the temple. My son’s name is Ram. I am not against any religion. But I want to adopt the good things of every religion.”

What was Shabana Azmi’s full statement?

Regarding the weak performance of ‘Batwara 1947’ at the box office, Shabana Azmi said on Zoom, “First of all, I am very surprised to see the total box office earnings of the film, because there are people around me who come and say that they liked the film very much.”

He said, “They say that they liked the message of the film. Many of them believe that it is very important to talk about humanity in today’s environment. On the other hand, people did not go to the theater and those who went to watch the film came out with a mixed reaction. The problem is that people cannot accept Sunny Deol as a Muslim.”

Shabana’s question- Has Sunny played the character of a Pakistani?

Shabana Azmi said that even the people who watched ‘Batwara 1947’ probably did not understand the film completely. He said, “I am surprised by the way people are reacting. People watching the film also think that Sunny Deol has played the character of a Pakistani. It is not so. This thing is not settling properly in their minds.”

Shabana further said, “If people from both religions are not happy with the film, it means that it is something which is pure and beautiful.”

Shabana Azmi’s two films released simultaneously

Shabana Azmi’s two films Bantwara 1947 and Awarapan 2 have been released simultaneously on 14th August. The film Bantwara 1947 was a flop, while Awarapan 2 has collected more than 200 rupees. Shabana Azmi has played a negative role in Awarapan 2.
