In the year 1994, Sushmita Sen became the first Indian to win Miss Universe and her name was recorded in history. Although this journey was not easy for him. Recently, Sushmita talked about the struggles of her journey in Shipra Neeraj’s session Rising Above the Odds. She told that her father was angry with her going to Miss India. Her mother had made her finale dress from curtain fabric.
Sushmita said that she had filled the Miss India form on the insistence of her mother. When his mother informed his father about this, he did not talk to him for two days. He wanted Sushmita to concentrate on studies to become an IPS officer. Sushmita told that her mother somehow convinced her father. However, he put a condition that complete preparations should be made within the budget he is giving.

Sushmita said, in the budget I got, I could do shopping only from Sarojini Nagar. We went to the hanger shops on the streets, from there my mother bought some clothes without asking me, including curtain cloth. She picked up an English magazine and went to the petticoat stitcher below the building. She showed a picture and said, make this dress for my daughter and wear it on stage. The person who stitched the petticoat made my gown, in which I won Miss India. Mom prepared my gloves by putting elastic in the socks.
Mother could not see Miss India crowning because of Sushmita
Sushmita told that she could not do anything special in the first 4 rounds of Miss India, whereas Aishwarya was winning every round. His mother was about to leave for Goa to see him when he called and refused. Sushmita said that she has lost all the rounds, she will not be seen anywhere in the competition, hence she will not like it if her mother is in front of her. Following Sushmita’s advice, her mother stayed in Bombay.
Sushmita reached the top-5 in the competition, but she was sure that she would not win. When she heard that Aishwarya Rai had come second, Sushmita expressed regret saying that she could not even come second. However, later his name was announced as the winner.

Let us tell you that after winning Miss India, Sushmita Sen became the first Indian to win the title of Miss Universe.
