Syrian leader visits Russia for the first time after the coup

Al-Sharaa led a military coup that overthrew former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Putin has been a long-time supporter of Bashar al-Assad. In this respect this meeting was very important.

Putin described the ousting of the Assad regime as a great success and a step towards social unity. Assad is living in Russia after the coup. Here he has been given asylum on humanitarian grounds.

In the meeting, Putin said that Russia and Syria have had friendly relations for 8 decades. He said that Russia’s friendship with Syria has never depended on political circumstances.

Putin also praised the recently held Syrian parliament elections. He said,

Russia wants to secure its military bases

In the meeting, Russia emphasized on securing its military bases and strengthening relations with the new Syrian government. Russia has military bases in Tartus and Khmeimim in Syria.

Russia’s military intervention during the Syrian civil war in 2015 helped keep Assad in power. Russia also carried out airstrikes on the boys of al-Sharaa during the rebellion against Assad.

After the coup in Syria, Russia’s military deployment at these bases has decreased. The Tartus base provides port to Russia and the Khmeimim airbase is used for military operations in Africa.

Syria’s new government canceled Russia’s investment deal in Tartus and handed it over to Dubai’s DP World company. Despite this, Russia has been supplying oil, grain and other resources to Syria at low prices.
