Saba is the elder daughter of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore. She is the younger sister of Saif and elder sister of Soha.
Saba Ali Pataudi, daughter of actress Sharmila Tagore and former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, recently spoke about her parents’ interfaith marriage and religious upbringing. He told that after marriage his mother had adopted Islam and also taught her children about it.
Saba said this while talking to YouTube channel ‘Big Bollywood Buffs’. He told that his parents did not force him, Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan to follow any religion.
When he was asked the question in the interview, “Are you religious?” To this Saba replied, “I am very religious, but I think I am more spiritual than religious. However, to be spiritual, my connection is with Islam. So for me both are almost the same. I would say that my religion is Islam and I have a connection with it. If I had to think about God, I would call him Allah.”
Saba Ali Khan Pataudi is a famous jewelery designer and the chief manager (mutawalli) of the royal charitable trust ‘Auqaf-e-Shahi’ of the princely state of Bhopal.
Saba further said, “This does not mean that I do not respect other religions. Not at all. I think Buddhism also connects with my thinking to a great extent and if we talk about all religions, there is only one source of power. I also believe in it. You can call him Allah, Ram or give any name as per your convenience. I would probably call him Allah, but in reality he is the same source of energy to which we all are connected.” So it’s really no different.”
Sharmila Tagore adopted Islam after marriage
Saba told about her mother Sharmila Tagore, “When Amma and Abba got married, my mother actually converted to Islam. She also told us about Islam, so that we would not get confused and we could get some kind of understanding. So we did not have a temple in our house. We did not follow Hinduism. In fact, she taught me about my religion and explained Islam, Ramadan and things related to it.”
Sharmila Tagore married Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi on 27 December 1968. After converting to Islam, she changed her name to Begum Ayesha Sultana.
She further added, “After that it was our choice what we wanted to pursue. Of the three siblings, I was the most attached to my faith. So I follow it. It’s something I do.”
Saba also clarified, “But it is not that my father, my mother or anyone else has imposed anything on any of us.”
