Jhanvi played the role of Achiamma in ‘Peddi’. The film was directed by Buchi Babu Sana and starred Ram Charan in the lead role.
Actress Jhanvi Kapoor talked about the sexualization and objectification of her character in the film ‘Peddi’. She admitted that she could have raised her voice more strongly to stop this.
Jhanvi said this during a conversation in ‘Koffee with Karan’ season 9. Show host Karan Johar had asked him a question about the ‘Peddi’ controversy.
Karan Johar said in the show, “What happened regarding the Peddi controversy? I know it affected you in many ways. I spoke to you the day it happened.”
He further said, “There are two ways of looking at it. One, people were with you that your character was sexualised. The other side was saying that you were on the set, so why didn’t you stop it?”

Karan asked Jhanvi how she felt about this whole matter.
Janhvi said, “I felt a lot, Karan. I was hesitant to talk about it because so many people had worked so hard on the film. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t even know if there was really anything to say.”
‘I must take responsibility for myself’
Jhanvi also said, “It is important to take responsibility for my part. Whatever role I played in that entire controversy, I should take responsibility for it. Such a narrative can have a negative impact on the society. Especially on my gender i.e. women.”
He said, “This weighs heavily on my conscience. The shame of this will always remain with me.”

Jhanvi Kapoor had reached ‘Koffee with Karan’ with Varun Dhawan.
‘I could have been louder’
Jhanvi said that she could have made a bigger issue about it.
She said, “Could I have done more? Could I have been more cautious? Could I have raised my voice more loudly about this? The answer to all these questions is 100 percent yes.”
Jhanvi said, “Was it a problematic thing? Was there too much objectification in it? Did it promote sexual assault at the level of the story? Yes.”
“Now all I can do is make sure it doesn’t happen again,” she said.

Jhanvi Kapoor and Ram Charan’s film ‘Peddi’ had earned Rs 341.90 crore worldwide.
‘It seems like a professional responsibility to obey the director’
Jhanvi said that while expressing her views, she does not want to appear as if she is putting the responsibility on someone else. However, he said that actors are often in a position to follow the instructions of the director.
She said, “I am not saying this to put the responsibility on someone else. But you know how it is. You feel that you have to do whatever the director says. You have to remain professional. You have to listen to the director.”
He also told that it is not always clear in the script how the scene will look on screen.
Jhanvi said, “It is often not written in the script what the camera angles will be. It is very rare that you have a completely bound script.”
“So I was trying to make things less problematic based on the information available,” she said.
Jhanvi said, “Whenever I got information about something, I used to try to improve it at the same time.”
‘I should have taken advantage of my privilege’
Jhanvi admitted that she comes from a privileged background. She said, “But at the same time, I also have to take responsibility for my part. I come from a place of privilege.”
Jhanvi said, “I should have taken advantage of this privilege. Anyway, for being privileged, I have to face criticism, so I should have used it.” What was the ‘Peddi’ controversy?
Many viewers had raised questions on the way Jhanvi Kapoor’s character Achiamma was shown in ‘Peddi’. Audiences had expressed concerns about the sexualization and objectification of the character.
There was also criticism regarding the treatment of characters in the film that some scenes may seem to show sexual assault as normal or correct.
After this, director Buchi Babu Sana publicly apologized. He had said that the team had no intention of insulting or objectifying female characters. The controversial scenes were removed or changed in the theatrical cut.

Buchi Babu had also apologized to the audience by writing a post on social media platform X.
