Indian citizen Sai Varshit Kandula was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment on Thursday for attempting to attack the White House in America. Kundla had planned an attack on 22 May 2023 in a rented truck. He was convicted on May 13, 2024, on charges of willful damage to American property.

During interrogation, he told that he wanted to kill President Joe Biden by taking control of the government. Was planning for this for 6 months. Born in Chandanagar, India, Kandula was a permanent resident of the United States and had a green card.

According to the Justice Department, the purpose of this attack was to overthrow America’s democratically elected government and establish a dictatorship inspired by Nazi ideology.

Had dinner first, then hit the barrier with the truck

According to court documents, Kundla reached Washington by flight from St. Louis on May 22, 2023. After landing at Dulles Airport at 5:20 pm, he rented a truck at 6:30 pm. After this he had dinner and got fuel filled in the truck.

After this Kundla moved towards Washington DC. At 9:34 pm, he crashed the truck into the barrier protecting the White House and President’s Park.

After the first hit, he took the truck back and tried again. In the second attempt, the truck broke down and smoke started coming out of the engine.

US Secret Service officers arrested Kandula at the scene.

Such incidents have happened before also

After this attack the security of the White House was increased. According to the New York Times, incidents of vehicles colliding with barricades near Capitol Hill have already happened. Nearly three months after the Capitol violence that occurred on January 6, 2021, two Capitol Police officers were struck by a car. One person died and the other was injured.

In August 2023, a man rammed his car into a barricade near Capitol Hill. After this the car caught fire. Accused Richard York came out of the car and also fired in the air. After this he shot himself.
