Singer Vipin Aneja is in the news these days for the song ‘Tere Paas Main’ from the film ‘Main Vapis Aaunga’. While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, he told that this song is not a new project for him, but a long wait and an important milestone in his musical journey. He wrote ‘Jaane Tere Shehar Ka’, A.R. Talked about experiences with Rahman, experimentation with Honey Singh and changing music. He says that every new song gives him an opportunity to move forward. Question: How special is the song ‘Tere Paas Main’ from the film ‘Main Vapaas Aaunga’ for you? Answer: This song is very special for me. The emotional world of both ‘Tere Paas Main’ and ‘Jaane Tere Shehar Ka’ is similar. Both seem like New Age Ghazals. People have embraced it like the first song and it will be around for a long time. Question: People still remember the song ‘Jaane Tere Shehar Ka’ from the film ‘Jazbaa’, how do you look at that journey? Answer: This song gave me identity. This song has been filmed on Irrfan Khan and Aishwarya Rai in the film. Initially it was thought that it would not get much promotion, but later it reached the people on its own. Even today youth listen to it and keep it in their playlist. Question: What was the story of reaching the song ‘Jaane Tere Shehar Ka’? Answer: I met Arco during a music festival in Mumbai. He heard me live and liked my voice. From there I got a chance and later this song became a part of the film. Question: ‘I’ll be back’ and A.R. How was the experience of associating with Rahman? Answer: My association with Rahman Sahab is very old. I told him that my voice has its own identity and he should create something accordingly. Later in this project I recorded different versions. Working with him is like a dream come true. Question: A.R. How did you first meet Rahman? Answer: I met Rahman Sahab about 20 years ago at the World Pop Music Festival in Kazakhstan. I was representing India as a singer and he was the judge. He heard my performance and later gave me a chance in international concerts also. The connection started from there. Before ‘I will be back’, I have sung in some of his South films. Question: You also talked to Rahman about making a different kind of music for your voice? Answer: I told him that my voice is more comfortable in the mid and low range. My voice has its own identity. After this there was a long conversation and I recited ghazals to him till late night. This was a special experience for me. Question: Which thing related to Honey Singh was most memorable? Answer: Honey Singh called me after listening to my song and said that he liked ‘Jaane Tere Shehar Ka’. He wanted to do something different with me. Later we experimented with mixing ghazal and rap. Question: How was the use of ghazal and rap with Honey Singh? Answer: Our identity is old. We worked together and made a new experiment in ghazal-rap. It is important to keep exploring new paths in music. Question: What change did you feel in music after the arrival of OTT? Answer: OTT has given more freedom to music. Now one does not have to be limited to just traditional film sound. New topics and different types of songs are getting space. Question: Is melody being left behind in today’s times? Answer: I don’t think so. Trends keep changing, but good tune, good lyrics and good voice reach the hearts of people. The melody never ends. Question: After thousands of live shows, which stage was the most memorable? Answer: Performing on the international stage with Rahman Sahab was memorable, but singing in Mahakaal was the most emotional experience. Singing bhajans and stotras there was a different experience. Question: How do you look at your entire journey today? Answer: I am the first person in my family who made professional music a career. Fell many times along the way, learned and moved forward. When people say that they consider my success as their own, then it seems that the hard work is going in the right direction. Question: Even after so many years, does learning continue today? Answer: Absolutely. Even today I consider myself a student of music. I have been on stage for 27 years, but every new song and composer teaches me something new.
