The biggest name in Tamil Nadu politics at present is actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam. After becoming the largest party by winning 108 seats in the assembly elections, even though they fell 10 seats short of majority, this result has created not uncertainty but political turmoil. From Congress to AIADMK and many regional parties, who were earlier opposed to Vijay, are now making rapid efforts to come in his support. The question is no longer with whom Vijay will form the government, but the bigger question is why so many parties are suddenly ready to stand with him.
The election results were revealed on 4 May. since then Tamil Nadu A period of meetings and talks started behind the scenes in politics. With TVK becoming the largest party, Vijay came to the center of state politics. After this, each party started considering its options and seeing what was the safest path for them. The first initiative came from Vijay’s father SA Chandrashekhar. He invited Congress for alliance with TVK. He said that this could be an opportunity for Congress to regain its lost political identity in Tamil Nadu.
TVK becomes the largest party with 108 seats
However, Congress did not take any immediate decision on this in the beginning. There was a discussion going on within the party as to whether it would be right to go with a new party and whether he should leave his old ally DMK. After this, a meeting of big Congress leaders was held in Delhi. Leaders like party president Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal participated in it. After this meeting, the Congress leadership allowed its MLAs from Tamil Nadu to assess the situation and take a final decision.
Congress also put some conditions in return for support. It also indicated that it can also bring along its allies like VCK, DMDK, CPI, CPI(M) and IUML. If all these parties come together with TVK, then the majority mark can be easily crossed. Meanwhile, AIADMK also indicated that it is ready to go with Vijay. Due to this the political equations became more complex. Senior party leader Lima Rose Martin publicly said that talks are going on between AIADMK and TVK.
Attempt to cross the majority mark through alliance
It is being told that his son-in-law Adharv Arjun is considered close to Vijay and is playing an active role in the talks. Due to this, the communication between the two sides has become even more intense. Amidst these incidents, continuous meetings are being held at Vijay’s house in Panayiyur. His close associates and many senior leaders are participating in these. Further strategies and possible alliances are being discussed in these meetings.
Now the biggest question is why all the parties want to come in support of Vijay. The answer lies not in ideology but in the fear of political survival. If the government is not formed at this time and elections are held again in the state, then there is a possibility that Vijay’s party will return stronger. In such a situation, there will be very little political space left for other parties. This opportunity is also historic for Congress. The party last held power in Tamil Nadu in 1967. Since then the politics of the state has been limited between DMK and AIADMK. Congress has been contesting elections most of the time as an ally of DMK. In such a situation, going with Vijay is being considered as an opportunity for Congress to create its own identity and make a new beginning.
Fear of re-election, crisis of existence in parties
The situation of AIADMK is even more challenging. After losing power in 2021, the party has finished third in the 2026 elections. If it remains out of power this time too, it may have to wait till 2031. Due to this long gap, the party organization may become weak and its support base may also decrease. This is the reason why AIADMK also wants a share in power somehow. BJP’s strategy is also considered important in this entire incident. According to reports, the party does not want TVK government to be formed with the support of Congress and Left parties. Therefore she can inspire AIADMK to go with Vijay.
There is a situation of instability within AIADMK also. If the party leadership does not take any decision, then some of its MLAs may secede and support TVK themselves. This may also create a situation of disunity in the party. The situation of regional parties is also no different. Parties like PMK, AMMK and VCK have been presenting themselves as an alternative for a long time, but due to electoral compulsions they have to form alliances with bigger parties.
All these parties fear that if they do not take the right decision now, their political role may end in the future. The situation that is developing in Tamil Nadu is also being linked to the politics of Delhi. In 2013, when no party got majority in Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party formed the government with the support of Congress. Arvind Kejriwal’s government lasted only 49 days, but in the elections held thereafter, the Aam Aadmi Party returned with an overwhelming majority and remained in power for a long time.
Tamil Nadu parties want to avoid situation like Delhi
Tamil Nadu parties want to avoid a similar situation. They fear that if Vijay does not get a chance to form the government and elections are held again, TVK may achieve a huge victory. This is the reason why at this time all the parties want to take a decision as soon as possible and do not want to stay out of power at any cost. In the current situation, Vijay has emerged as a new power center in Tamil Nadu politics. This is such a center which it is no longer possible for any party to ignore. Therefore, supporting Vijay is now not just a political option but has become a compulsion for many parties. In the coming days, it will be important to see which party goes with whom and how the next government is formed in Tamil Nadu.
