Wangchuk spoke to the media in Delhi on Sunday.
Sonam Wangchuk has given a deadline of October 2 on the demand for including statehood and inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule. While talking to the media in Delhi, he said that very little progress has been made in this matter.
Wangchuk said this on the completion of one year of his detention under NSA following the violence in Leh on September 24 last year. Four people died during police action in this violence.
He said that if the government does not take any decision till October 2, then the path of peaceful demonstration and agitation will have to be adopted.

Questions on investigation: Sonam Wangchuk asked what happened to the report of the commission formed to investigate the Ladakh violence. When will the officials, Lieutenant Governor and Union Home Minister respond about ordering these actions.
Policies are being made without consultation: Wangchuk alleged that policy decisions were already being taken without consulting the local people. He said, “All policy decisions related to land, industrial policy, tourism policy or local governance are already being taken. If all this is decided now, what will be left for the democratic structure?”

On September 9, a meeting was held between the Ladakh sub-committee and the Union Home Ministry. Leaders of Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance participated in it.
According to Ladakh Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, both sides discussed including special provisions under Article 371 of the Constitution to protect the interests of the local population.
Purpose of demand for Sixth Schedule
Local people and civil organizations of Ladakh, such as Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, are demanding implementation of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Its main objective is to protect the identity of more than 97% of the tribal population of Ladakh, their unique culture, language and environment from external interference.
Under the Sixth Schedule, Autonomous District Councils give these rights to the local people-
Land Security: Rules can be made to prevent outsiders from purchasing or occupying land.
Protection of Culture: Can make its own rules on marriage, divorce, inheritance and local traditions.
Local Administration: Local people can take their own decisions related to the development and resources of their area.
Violence broke out during the movement in September 2025
Sonam Wangchuk had agitated in September 2025 demanding statehood for Ladakh. During this period, there was violence in Leh on 24 September. In these demonstrations, 4 people were killed and 90 people were injured.
Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, two days after the violence. After this he was immediately shifted to Jodhpur. He was in Jodhpur jail for 170 days. He was released on 14 March.
Wangchuk was born in Ladakh, did mechanical engineering from Srinagar.
Wangchuk was born in 1966 near Alchi in Leh district, Ladakh. Due to the absence of a school in his village, he was not enrolled in any school until the age of 9. During this time his mother gave him basic education.
At the age of 9, he was taken to Srinagar and enrolled in a school there. Later he also studied in the Special Central School of Delhi. Then he did B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology i.e. NIT, Srinagar.
