At least 30 people have died in a stampede during an annual festival at Haiti’s Citadel Laferriere fortress. Many people are said to be injured.
This incident happened near the entry gate of the fort. According to officials, the situation worsened due to large crowd and sudden rain. People started trying to come out together, leading to a stampede.
The fort was built in the early 19th century and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Every year a large number of students and tourists come here.
Haiti’s acting Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé has expressed grief over the incident. He said that the government stands with the families of the victims. He told that many youth were present on the spot.
Relief and rescue team is deployed on the spot. Officials say the death toll may increase. At present all the injured are being treated and investigation into the incident has been started.
