Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has agreed to the US three-party talks proposal. He said on Saturday that Ukraine would support the proposal if talks could lead to a prisoner exchange or pave the way for a meeting of national leaders.

Zelensky said Ukraine’s top negotiator Rustem Umerov had briefed him on recent discussions Friday with U.S. negotiators, and a new round of talks was scheduled for Saturday to discuss Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.

Meanwhile, Russian Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev is also present in Miami for talks with US officials. According to Zelensky, the US is now proposing three-party talks between the US, Ukraine and Russia at the level of national security advisors.

He said, “If the meeting of National Security Advisors agrees on a meeting of the leaders, then I cannot oppose it. We will support such an American proposal. Let’s see what happens next.”

Zelensky clearly said that Ukraine will support only those proposals in which the current frontline in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine remains as it is. This means that Ukraine will not have to give up the part it currently controls. They do not want any agreement in which their occupied territory would have to be given to Russia.

“To me, the fairer option is to remain where we are now,” he said.

On the US proposal to create a ‘free economic zone’ in eastern Ukraine, Zelensky said that it is for the people of Ukraine to decide. Finally, he stressed that they are working carefully at every step so that land distribution is not a compromise, but a permanent peace and reliable security guarantee.
