Australia has decided to make a woman the army chief for the first time in history. Lieutenant General Susan Coyle will take over this responsibility from July. According to the government, Coyle will replace Lieutenant General Simon Stuart. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that this is the first time in 125 years that a woman is being made army chief. Defense Minister Richard Marles called it a historic moment and said it would be an inspiration for women. Coyle, 55, joined the Army in 1987 and has served in several senior positions. Currently the share of women in the Australian Defense Force is about 21% and a target has been set to increase it to 25% by 2030. This decision is considered important amid allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination in the army in recent years. The government has also appointed Navy Chief Mark Hammond as the new Chief of the Defense Force and Matthew Buckley as the Navy Chief.
