The number of children who died in Indonesia last week in the fall of an Islamic boarding school building has increased to 49. Relief personnel took out 35 more bodies from the rubble on Saturday and Sunday. Even now 14 students are said to be missing.
The accident took place on September 29 in a hundred -year -old school located in Sido Aarjo area of Java Island. When the building fell, hundreds of students were present inside. Most students were between 12 and 19 years old. Only one student survived without injury.
97 students suffered minor injuries and were discharged after treatment, while 6 were seriously injured and hospitalized. According to the police, two storeys of the school were being built without permission. This is why the structure weakened and the entire building collapsed.
Building expert Mouji Iramavan said that the structure of the building could not bear weight while putting a concrete, as the construction standards were not followed. He also said that students should not have been in the building while running the construction work.
The head of Sidoarjo district also confirmed that the school administration had not taken any permission for construction. At present, no official statement has come from the school administration.
