In America, Indian-origin doctor Jitendra Patel and his Atlanta-based clinic have entered into a civil settlement for $ 14 million (about Rs 130 crore) over allegations of healthcare fraud. An investigation by the US Justice Department revealed that the clinic performed excessive and complex medical procedures on patients. Also, in many cases, bills were raised for tests and surgeries which were either not necessary or were not done at all. Payments were taken from Medicare, Medicaid and other government health programs based on these claims. The matter was complained by a former employee of the clinic and a doctor. He alleged that the focus of the clinic was on increasing revenue rather than treating patients. Under the settlement, the clinic and the doctor have not accepted any allegations, but the matter has been settled by paying Rs 130 crore. Both the complainants will get around Rs 27 crore from this amount.
