Britain’s public broadcasting organization BBC has decided to conduct mass layoffs. Around 2000 jobs will be eliminated in the next two years, affecting approximately 10% of its total workforce. This step is being taken to save 500 million pounds (about Rs 5300 crore).
BBC’s interim director-general Rhodri Talfan Davis gave this information on Wednesday. He said this would be the biggest layoff since 2011. Currently about 21,500 employees are working in BBC.
Davis acknowledged that this decision will create uncertainty and anxiety for employees, but it has become necessary in the current economic circumstances. He said that due to rising inflation, decreasing income from license fees, decline in commercial revenue and global economic instability, expenditure has to be reduced.
BBC will take many strict steps to reduce expenses. This includes ban or control on new recruitments, cutting travel expenses, reducing expenditure on management consultancy and reducing expenditure on conferences and events.
BBC is now also working towards reducing costs by using technology more. The BBC is funded mainly by annual license fees from UK households.
