The Central Government has proposed to increase the total seats of Lok Sabha from 543 to 850. Its draft bill has been shared with the MPs. According to the proposal, out of 850, 815 seats will be given to the states and 35 seats will be given to the Union Territories.
The government is preparing to amend the constitution for this change. To implement this proposal, Article 81 of the Constitution will be amended. For this, a three-day special session of Parliament has been called from April 16. Women’s Reservation Bill will also be discussed in this.
This bill is planned to be implemented from the general elections of 2029. This move could drastically change the parliamentary representation in the country, although opposition has also started on this.
Delimitations based on 2011 census
The bill calls for the 2011 census data to be the basis for redistricting (delimitation) of seats. At present the official population figures are from the 2011 census only.
To speed up this process, the government will also introduce a Constitution Amendment Bill, a bill related to the Delimitation Act and a separate bill for Union Territories with legislatures like Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry in the Lok Sabha.
opposition from southern states
- Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin- The southern states followed the Centre’s policies for population control, but now they are being punished for it. There has been a demand from the Prime Minister to give assurance in the Parliament that the interests of the southern states will not be affected, but till now no response has been received.
- Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy- If seats are increased on a proportionate basis, women, SC and ST communities in southern states may suffer. This move could be a conspiracy to reduce the political power of the southern states.
Sibal said- North India will benefit more
Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said that the government is taking this step with the aim of taking political advantage in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. If the government wants to give 33% reservation to women, then it can be implemented only in the existing 543 seats. North India will benefit more from the redistribution of seats.
Maximum 40 seats can increase in UP
According to media reports, after women’s reservation, maximum 40 Lok Sabha seats can increase in UP. Here it will increase from 80 to 120. 24 seats will be reserved for women in Maharashtra. Here the Lok Sabha seats will increase from 48 to 72.
According to reports, the number of women seats in Bihar may be 20. The total seats here can reach 40 to 60. 15 women reserved seats may increase in MP. There will be 20 women seats in Tamil Nadu and 4 in Delhi. It is estimated that 7 women reserved seats will increase in Jharkhand.
