US President Donald Trump has directed to make a plan to capture Greenland. According to the Daily Mail, Trump has handed over this responsibility to the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). However, military officials do not seem to agree with this idea. They consider it legally wrong.
The report says that Trump’s interest may also be related to domestic politics. Mid-term elections are coming up later this year and Republicans are afraid of losing control of Parliament. Therefore, Trump wants to divert people’s attention from the problems of the economy by taking some big step.
‘The generals think Trump’s Greenland plan is absurd and illegal,’ a diplomatic source told the Daily Mail. He says the President’s stubbornness is like dealing with a five-year-old child.
Report- Trump is forcing European countries to leave NATO
If America attacks Greenland, it could create a serious crisis for NATO. Also, there may be a direct conflict with European leaders, due to which the NATO alliance may reach the verge of collapse.
Some European officials believe that the real objective of the radical MAGA faction around Trump is to destroy NATO from within, because Parliament will not allow them to withdraw from NATO.
Therefore, by occupying Greenland, European countries could be forced to leave NATO. The report says that if Trump wants to dismantle NATO, this might be the easiest way.
Why does Trump want to weaken or break up NATO?
According to media reports, Trump has long considered NATO inappropriate. He believes that America spends the most money and resources in this, while European countries do not meet the target of spending 2% of their GDP on defense.
In his first term, he demanded increased payments from NATO allies and said the US would not protect them if they did not agree. In the 2024 election campaign, Trump said he would allow Russia to do whatever it wants on NATO members that do not spend enough.
Trump’s aim is to promote an “America First” policy. In which they want to spend less American taxpayers’ money on foreign security. They also want to force Europe to defend itself.
Some analysts believe that Trump wants to build better relations with Russia by weakening NATO. Trump’s former national security advisor John Bolton had said that he would try to withdraw America from NATO. They consider it outdated and a burden on America.
However, many experts warn that this could isolate America. Europe could come under Russia’s influence and global security could weaken.
Trump said – If Greenland is not captured then Russia and China will come here
Earlier on Friday, Trump had told why it is necessary for America to occupy Greenland. During a meeting with top officials of oil and gas companies at the White House, he said that if America did not do this, countries like Russia and China would take it over.
Trump also said that acquiring Greenland is not about buying land, it is about keeping Russia and China away. We cannot see such countries becoming our neighbours.
Trump said- I want an easy deal with Greenland
Trump further said, if America is not able to acquire Greenland in an easy way, then other tough methods will have to be adopted. He said, ‘We will do something on the Greenland issue, whether they like it or not.’
He told reporters, ‘I want the deal to be done in an easy way.’ However, he also expressed his softness towards Denmark and said, ‘Well, I am a big fan of Denmark. He has been very good to me.
When he was asked whether the US was planning to persuade the people of Greenland to join the US by giving them money directly. On this Trump said, ‘Right now I am not talking about money for Greenland. Maybe I will do it later. Trump linked the issue to national security.
Russian and Chinese activities increased near Greenland
Trump cited increased Russian and Chinese naval activities near Greenland, including destroyers and submarines. Trump insisted, “We will not let Russia or China take over Greenland.”
He said he likes both China and Russia. He has good relations with leaders Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, but he cannot give them Greenland.
Trump cited the presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the area as the reason behind occupying Greenland.
Trump said – we will protect better by becoming the owner
When Trump was asked that America already has a military base there, then what is the need for complete occupation. To this Trump replied that the leases are not enough. “When we own it, we protect it,” he said. The lease is not protected that much. We want complete ownership rights.
Trump also criticized old diplomacy. He said that countries cannot make 100-year deals, rather they are protected only by ownership rights.
Trump has been saying since 2019 that he wants to buy Denmark’s autonomous region Greenland, while both the US and Denmark are members of the NATO military alliance. If Trump moves towards occupying Greenland, it would mean that America would be pitted against its own NATO member states.
Denmark threatened to attack
Denmark responded amid US President Donald Trump’s threat to occupy Greenland. According to CNN report, the Defense Ministry had threatened that if any foreign force attacks their area, the soldiers will immediately retaliate and open fire without waiting for orders.
The rule of attacking without orders is from 1952. Then Denmark had made a rule for its army, according to which in the event of foreign forces attacking the country, the soldiers would have to fight immediately. For this they do not need to take permission from any senior officer.
Greenland PM had said – our country is not for sale
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen has said that when the US President talks about military intervention by linking Greenland to Venezuela, it is not only wrong but disrespectful towards our people.
