According to the statement given in the programme, Dhirendra Shastri said that he could not live without talking to him on this issue. Dhirendra Shastri- What do you know about culture? Dhirendra Shastri said, ‘A so-called woman gave a statement about Rani Padmavati. The woman called Johar cowardice. O Nakkatu, Chandalan, Jauhar is not cowardice, it is bravery, devotion and devotion to the husband. What do you know about the culture of Jauhar?’ He further said, ‘Those who oppose faith cannot understand Jauhar. Some people even convert brothers into Saiyans, what will they know about Jauhar? In the ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ talk organized at the India International Center in Delhi on August 31, Swara, while referring to the Jauhar scene of the film Padmavat, said that it can send a wrong message to the rape survivors. He further said, ‘Do we want to tell survivors that they do not deserve to live, that if you were a truly honorable and brave woman, you would have killed yourself? Are we saying that rape is the end of a woman’s life? In one scene, the stomach of a pregnant woman who is about to perform Jauhar is shown. Swara had said, “I was very angry after seeing this and I said ‘shit’ in the theater itself. After thinking for 5 days, I wrote an open letter to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.” After this statement of Swara, people on social media accused her of insulting the historical sacrifice. As the controversy escalated, Swara gave clarification. There was a controversy over Swara’s statement. After some time he shared a video on his Instagram account. She said, “A clip of mine is going viral on social media. I was asked why I had written an open letter after watching Padmaavat. I want to clarify that I did not call Queen Padmavati or the other women in the palace cowards. If you have to abuse, then abuse on the right topic. I had said that if I were a rape victim, after watching the climax, I would feel that I have shown cowardice by surviving the rape.” ‘Is a woman’s chastity more valuable than her life?’ Swara said that even today rape has become like an epidemic in the country. Referring to the recent gang rape in a moving bus in Delhi, he raised the question whether we should make such films which give the message that a woman’s chastity is more valuable than her life? Giving the example of Nirbhaya case, he said that Nirbhaya fought for her life till her last breath. No woman’s will to live should be underestimated. Priyanka wrote- ‘If the choice is between becoming a slave of the conquerors and becoming a sex slave kept in their harem, then many women will choose the first option. Some women may choose another option. However, you can choose any one of these as per your choice. Whether anyone agrees or disagrees with your choice can be debated, but it was a choice. Responding to this, Swara wrote, “Priyanka ji, you are not understanding the real thing. The matter is not about the choice of women who commit Jauhar, but about what we are glorifying. Doesn’t a rape survivor have the right to live?” What is the Jauhar scene of Padmavat? The Jauhar scene in the film comes near the climax. Alauddin Khilji’s army defeats the Rajputs and enters the fort of Chittor. Deepika Padukone’s character ‘Rani Padmavati’ performs Jauhar with the women of the fort. In the film it is shown as an incident of people setting themselves on fire to avoid being caught.
