There has been a cyber attack on the fridges and freezers of supermarkets in 7 countries of Europe. Hackers increased the temperature of the fridge by breaking into the online system. Due to this, milk, meat and other food items kept in the shops got spoiled. Such cases have been reported in Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands, Estonia, Luxembourg, Finland and Ireland. The temperature of fridges in some stores in Belgium reached 70 degrees Celsius. According to Euronews, these attacks took place between Sunday night and Monday morning. Earlier on October 12, a similar attack took place on hundreds of supermarkets in France. Goods worth millions of euros spoiled in Belgium. The temperature of fridges in many supermarkets in Belgium reached 70 degrees. Due to this, the food kept in the shops got spoiled and goods worth millions of euros had to be thrown away. According to the Belgian newspaper ‘Le Soir’, about 40 stores of Delhaize, 15 of Carrefour, 15 of Intermarché and 5 of Spar were affected. Fridge systems at a meat company and an Ikea store near the city of Mons were also affected. Belgium’s Cyber Security Center has confirmed the attack. A Delhaize spokesperson said that faults were found in the refrigerator systems of several stores. The company immediately took necessary steps so that the shops could remain open. Carrefour also confirmed the cyber attack, but said the damage was not significant. Fridges shut down in 13 stores in Ireland The fridge systems of 13 out of 223 stores of Irish supermarket chain Supervalue were attacked. The company removed the cold and frozen food kept in these fridges from sale. ICA and Coop Supermarket stores in Sweden were also affected. There the temperature of the freezer increased rapidly at night. The manager of an ICA store in Stockholm said that the attack took place at around 2 am. It was discovered at 5:30 in the morning. By then the temperature of all the freezers in the store had reached 50 degrees Celsius and the goods kept in them had spoiled. According to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, the same thing happened in 6 stores of Coop. The country’s cyber security agency is investigating these cases. The systems of 17 companies in the Netherlands were attacked; a store of Selver Supermarket in Estonia was affected. The temperature of the fridge there reached 50 degrees Celsius. Fridges and freezers of at least 17 companies were targeted in the Netherlands. However, the names of these companies have not been disclosed. Delhaize in Luxembourg closed its ordering system as a precaution. According to Finnish media, several K-Group supermarkets there were also affected. Temperature increased by putting the fridge in defrost mode. According to Stéphane Moelans, CEO of Belgian company Sabkobel, this attack was similar to the previous attack in France. Hackers put the refrigerator’s cooling unit into defrost mode. In this mode, the cooling of the refrigerator stops to melt the ice. Due to this the temperature started increasing. Moelans said that this glitch cannot be fixed by software updates alone. For this, some changes will have to be made in the refrigerator system. No hacker group took responsibility. Nowadays, supermarket fridges and freezers can be controlled remotely through the internet. For this reason, if they malfunction or get hacked, the entire goods in the shops can get spoiled. A spokesperson for the European Commission said that these incidents show that cyber attacks can affect not only companies but also the everyday lives of ordinary people. At present, no hacker group has taken responsibility for these attacks. It is not yet known who was behind the attacks that took place in France last month. ————————- Also read this news… Report- Indian companies interfering in American elections: Campaigning through fake social media accounts; Indian consultant companies and content creators are accused of promoting candidates through social media in America’s midterm elections.
