There is no need for any heavy dialogue to understand how great would be the pain of a mother if her daughter goes missing. Just that mother’s face is enough. This was the strongest weapon that ‘Gandhari’ had, a mother, her lost daughter and the passion to go to any extent to get her back.

But the film twisted this simple and powerful idea so much, decorated it so much and added so many twists that in the end it seems less like the mother’s story and more like an exercise in screenplay.

Taapsee Pannu plays the character of Bani with full strength. She runs, fights, gets beaten and then gets up and fights again. The film wants to bring out every kind of emotion from him. The only problem is that the story for which she is doing so much, falls at her feet again and again.

How is the story of the film?

Bani (Taapsee Pannu) and Gokul (Ishvak Singh) are on a journey with their daughter. Everything is going well, but suddenly the daughter disappears. After this the search for a mother begins.

After reaching a small town named Joypura, Bani realizes that the matter is not just about the disappearance of a girl. There is a big network behind it and there are many faces in the city who are difficult to trust.

Bani also loses her eyesight. But this is where the most interesting idea of ​​the film comes in, she starts hiding her condition and pretending to be blind, so that she can reach out to the people who are behind her daughter’s disappearance.

Child trafficking, police, connivance of local people, religious symbols and many mysterious characters get added to the story.

Artists like Meeta Vashishtha, Chhaya Kadam, Swastika Mukherjee, Jatin Sarna, Chandan Roy and Prashant Narayan are present in the story, but amidst so many characters, the real story often gets left behind.

The film constantly tries to surprise you. The problem is that after a while the twists become tiring rather than surprising.

How is the acting of the star cast?

Taapsee Pannu has played the character of Bani with complete honesty. His hard work is clearly visible in the action sequences. She is seen completely going through the physical and emotional difficulties of the character.

But acting works only when the story supports it. At many places, the more Taapsee tries to give emotion, the more artificial the film starts looking.

Ishwak Singh is fine, but his character did not get a chance to do much. Even good actors like Jatin Sarna, Meeta Vashishtha, Chhaya Kadam, Swastika Mukherjee and Chandan Roy are not able to leave much impact in front of the weakness of the screenplay.

Prashant Narayan gets very less screen time, but his presence seems more impressive than the rest of the cast.

How is the direction and screenplay of the film?

After watching a film like Devashish Makhija’s ‘Zoram’, the expectations from ‘Gandhari’ were very high. But here the director could not handle his own story. The film starts like a serious crime thriller. Then it becomes a search for the mother, then a revenge story and after some time an action film.

What could be a more simple and emotional story than a mother fighting to save her daughter? But perhaps it was not acceptable for the film to remain simple.

The screenplay brings a new twist every few minutes. Some twists work, but most just complicate the story further.

The biggest problem is the change in voice. Initially she is a troubled mother, but later the film makes her almost a super-woman. She confronts many people alone, gets beaten and then stands back up with the same strength. It certainly gives excitement to watch on screen, but its journey within the story does not seem completely believable.

There are also many symbols and metaphors in the film. The name ‘Gandhari’ itself is associated with the woman from Mahabharata who blindfolded herself to be with her blind husband. The film tries to connect this context with its story, but at many places this connection seems less natural and more forced.

Editing also creates more trouble instead of saving the story. Going back and forth in time, sudden flashbacks and constantly revealing secrets make the story fast, but do not give space to the emotions to breathe.

And then come the action scenes. Some sequences are good, but at many places the film goes so far away from reality that instead of connecting with the character’s pain, the audience starts watching the next stunt.

How is the music of the film?

The music and background score try to increase the tension of the film. In some places the atmosphere is created, but at times the music seems to speak louder than the visuals themselves.

Emotional parts like ‘Bitiya’ go with the mood of the story, but the music doesn’t cover up the film’s biggest flaw, the weak story.

Final Verdict: Watch the movie or not?

The idea in ‘Gandhari’ is not bad. Rather the idea is quite good. This story of a mother using her weakness as a weapon to save her daughter could have captivated the audience.

But the film twisted the story so much that the emotions got lost somewhere along the way.

Taapsee Pannu worked hard, did action and gave full strength to the character. But weak screenplay, excessive twists, uneven tone and drama that seems artificial at many places cannot handle the film.

There is a lot of mother’s anger in ‘Gandhari’, but the story has little power. Taapsee fights a lot, but the film loses on itself.
