Actor Priyanshu Painyuli, who became a household name by playing the role of Robin in ‘Mirzapur’, is in Uttarakhand these days. Along with acting, he is now also working on writing, producing and directing films. His first feature film ‘Jagar’ is based on folk Sanskrit of Uttarakhand.

.

Priyanshu wants that the film should be shown first to the people of those villages who supported him in the shooting. He told many things about the recognition he got from the dialogue ‘Yeh Bhi Theek Hai’, the difference between working in Hollywood and Bollywood, rejections, the struggles of the youth and his upcoming projects.

What came to light in the conversation with Priyanshu, read the entire interview…

Question: Uttarakhand is your home. How did the idea of coming here and creating ‘Jagar’ come about?

answer: Uttarakhand is not just a tour for me, it is my home in a way. I come here three-four times every year. My father, mother and brother are here. Our native district is Tehri Garhwal. Although I did not study in Dehradun. My father was in the Army, so I was born in Delhi and then lived in North-East and Bangalore. Gradually I started understanding Dehradun and Uttarakhand.

When I looked closely at the mountains and villages, I realized that there are so many stories here, which have not yet reached the outside world. I have studied film making. Along with acting, I am also very interested in writing and direction. I have been making short films earlier. In this sequence, my first feature film ‘Jagar’ was made.

Question: What kind of story is ‘Jagar’?

answer: ‘Jagar’ is based on the tradition of puja done here to awaken the Gods and Goddesses, but it is not a documentary. This is a girl’s story. When she experiences Jagar, village and mountains, she also reflects her life somewhere. She is able to understand the questions she is looking for answers by going there.

The film has been completed. We have produced it independently. My wife Vandana and I are its co-producers. Now the biggest challenge is to make it reach the people.

Question: How much did Robin of ‘Mirzapur’ change your life?

answer: It was natural to connect with Robin. When you do a show for two seasons in a row and people like your character so much, a connection is formed. I came in season-2. By that time the first season of Mirzapur had become a huge hit. All the characters like Kaalin Bhaiya, Munna Bhaiya, Guddu Bhaiya, Sweety had their own fan following.

Question: How did Robin’s ‘Yeh bhi theek hai’ dialogue come about?

answer: I thought there should be a catchphrase for such a colorful character. The line came to my mind – ‘This is also fine.’ I put that line and later it became a meme.

To be honest, I never thought that something would go viral like this. I concentrate on my work. I feel better when people recognize me for my work. People should not take photos with me just because I am famous. They should take photos when they liked my Robin or any other character.

Same thing happened with Robin. From America to UK, wherever Mirzapur was seen, people called me ‘Robin Bhaiya’. Now ‘Yeh Bhi Theek Hai’ has stuck with me forever.

Question: Is there anything from Hollywood that you want to see in the Indian film industry?

answer: I worked on Extraction, which is a Russo Brothers movie. There I saw that there was a feeling of equality among the crew. Many times there is a difference in the food and drink according to the hierarchy in the crew. I think this should change.

Be it the lighting guy or the spot boy, many times they are working harder than us. When it comes to food in Hollywood, it is of the same standard for everyone. It is different for the director and actor and nothing else for the lighting person. I think this change should come in India also.

Question: What advice would you give to today’s youth regarding career and success?

answer: I always tell the youth not to look for overnight success. Be it acting, music, journalism, media, IT, tech or AI, think about the long haul everywhere. Don’t think about how to make more money quickly or how to go viral quickly. Today you will go viral, tomorrow someone else will go viral. Your real competition is with yourself.

Question: How do you keep yourself motivated after receiving rejection?

answer: Got a lot of rejections. Many times we were selected, but someone else came. Many times the film was about to be made and got stopped.

If I had sat down after every rejection, I probably wouldn’t be here today. I use every rejection to increase my inner fire. I tell myself that I have been rejected once, I will do it next time.

Question: In which projects will you be seen in the coming time?

answer: A very different character is coming. I can tell its name because it has been announced…’Paan Parda Zarda’. This is the show of Gurmeet sir, who is the director of Mirzapur. There are many people from the technical and creative team of Mirzapur in it. This is Jio’s show.

In this, I have actors like Tanya Maniktala, Mona Singh, Sushant Sir, Anurita Jha, Manush Sharma and Tanvi Azmi. The story is set in the background of Bhopal. I can’t tell much of the story, but I will definitely say that a different world will be seen in it.

It also has a love story like Romeo-Juliet, a world of opium and a lot of spice.

Question: Your look is also quite different in this show?

answer: Absolutely. The way you are looking at me now, you probably won’t even recognize me in the show. I have lost a lot of weight. I am playing the character of a 24-25 year old boy from a village in Bhopal. The dialect there is also different, so a lot of hard work has been done for it.

This is a big show for us. Hopefully it will arrive this year. I am looking forward to it myself. Apart from this, there are two more films which I am shooting. Can’t reveal about them right now. I will definitely tell after the films are made.
