According to the report released this month, there were only 107 glacier lakes in Himachal Pradesh in 1990. By 2024, this number will increase to 669, an increase of 525%. 88 out of 669 lakes are in danger of ‘glacier lake outburst flood’ like Nepal. 9 lakes have been categorized as ‘extremely dangerous’, 18 as ‘highly dangerous’ and 26 as ‘moderately dangerous’. Researchers did special modeling on two lakes – Himsu Lake in the Beas Basin and an unnamed lake in the Satluj Basin. If the natural dam of Beas Lake breaks, there will be a flood of 1,385 cubic meters per second. That means about 14 lakh liters of water will flow every second. With this, 6 Olympic size swimming pools can be filled every second. Similarly, there will be an inundation of 3,507 cubic meters per second of water from Sutlej Lake. That means about 35 lakh liters of water will flow every second. Due to this, 588 buildings including dams and hydropower projects are at risk. The rising temperature of the Himalayas is further increasing this danger. A study by IIT Kharagpur published in July 2026 shows that the temperature in high altitude areas has increased by about 1 degree Celsius in the last 20 years. Scientists warn that this could lead to melting of glaciers and major changes in the flow of rivers. How do glacier lakes burst suddenly? When the glaciers located at high altitude in the mountains melt, their water starts collecting in the surrounding low areas or along some rocky wall. It gradually takes the form of a lake, which is called ‘Glacial Lake’. This lake can also be formed in front of the glacier or on its lower surface. These lakes are blocked by ice, mountain debris or a natural wall of rock i.e. ‘dam’. When this wall suddenly breaks due to some reason, millions of cubic meters of water stored in the lake flows uncontrollably downwards at a very high speed. This is called ‘glacial lake outburst flood, GLOF or glacier lake burst. The speed of flow of water in GLOF is many times higher than the flood caused by normal rain, due to which it quickly cuts and washes away everything in its path. Glacier lakes can burst due to 3 reasons… 1. Rapid melting of glaciers due to global warming 2. Falling of snow or rock into the lake, overflow of the lake due to heavy rains How can the devastation of GLOF be stopped? According to the National Disaster Management Authority, NDMA and the National GLOF Risk Mitigation Programme, does Nepal’s floods pose any immediate threat to India? Therefore, if there is excess water in Bhotekoshi, its water can join Sunakoshi and then Kosi river system. Due to this, Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura and Khagaria districts can be greatly affected. In 2008, the embankment of Kosi river was breached in Kusaha, Nepal. After this, Kosi river left its new/natural path and started flowing on the hundreds of years old eastward path. Due to this, the direction of the river suddenly turned towards densely populated and new areas, due to which more than 34 lakh people of Bihar became the victim of severe flood without any prior warning. However, this time due to landslide, landslide or breaking of the ice lake in Rasuwa, a huge amount of water has suddenly entered the river. But the river has not changed its course.
