Salman said on casting- sometimes mistakes happen
There is a continuous discussion on social media about the casting of contestants in Bigg Boss 20. On this, in the recent episode, Salman said, “We thought that we will choose the contestants very thoughtfully, but sometimes we make mistakes in our selection. People who are not seen in the show, their defense is that they are doing a lot in the game. But the truth is that whatever you are saying or doing is not worth airing. And when you say that you have no shortcomings, we feel that there are one or two ‘bastards’ people in the house too. There should be, right?”

Big change for TRP of Bigg Boss 20
It has been seen in all the previous seasons that due to the fear of being voted out in the show, the contestants stay in each other’s good books and do not indulge in fights. But this year, to change this tradition, a major change has been made in the format. This year the theme of the show has been kept as Tahastu, that is, every contestant will get 2 lives. With the premiere of the show, all the contestants have been told that if the risk of being eliminated is less, then they should play on the front foot i.e. show fierce personality and fight.

Publicity stunt to connect Riya Ahir with the show
There were reports of bringing Riya Ahir, who came into limelight by stopping the van during the Cockroach Janata Party protest, in the show. This was beneficial in the promotion of the show. Voting was also conducted to include Riya in the show. Riya reached the stage in the premiere, but while announcing the decision of the public, she said that due to less votes, she will not go to the show.

What happened in the last season i.e. Bigg Boss 19?
Controversies in Bigg Boss 19 also remained one of the biggest USPs of the show. The makers put different types of personalities together and within no time relationships, fights, allegations and social media debates started in the house.

Tanya Mittal was the biggest example of this. In the show, she used to call herself ‘Ma’am’ or ‘Boss’ and remained in the news due to the claims made about her lifestyle and alleged 150 bodyguards. The media counted her among the most talked about faces of the season.

On the other hand, Farhana Bhatt remained in the news due to her outspoken and sometimes sharp comments. His confrontation with popular TV actor Gaurav Khanna also made a lot of headlines.
Same formula followed in Bigg Boss 18 also
Rajat Dalal was one of the most talked about faces in Bigg Boss 18. His social media fan following was huge. His aggressive behavior inside the house also became a constant topic of discussion.

Karanvir Mehra’s game was completely different from this. He was not directly the most controversial contestant, but his debates, fights, relationships and taking stands on many issues made him a constant presence on the screen.

This means that the makers do not always want only ‘abusive’ contestants. They want such faces who will create a story for some reason or the other and will clash with aggressive contestants.
After all, why do makers choose controversial contestants?
1. Controversy, discussion, free publicity
The most important thing for Bigg Boss is not just TRP but staying in the news.
When any statement of a contestant is debated on social media, the clips of the show go viral. Media makes news on it. Videos are made on YouTube. Reactions start coming in on X and Instagram. This means that a contestant’s fight becomes free publicity for the show on many platforms.
2. Every season needs a ‘villain’
In the story of a reality show, it is often necessary to have a character with whom the audience is angry. Faces like Tanya Mittal and Farhana Bhatt played this role in Bigg Boss 19. Whether the audience agreed with her behavior or not, she definitely became a topic of discussion.
Many times, the contestant with whom the audience is most angry gets the most screen time.
3. Creating a story of ‘good vs bad’
Makers don’t just want a group of good people. They want personality clash. Clash is often seen in the show between calm people and aggressive people. Like Hina Khan vs Shilpa Shinde, Gauhar Khan vs Tanisha Mukherjee, Karishma Tanna vs Gautam Gulati, Munawar Farooqui vs Abhishek. The surprising thing is that such pairs often make it to the top-2.
4. Social media fan base is also a big power now
Today Bigg Boss is not just a show for TV audience. Fan following of contestants on Instagram, YouTube and other social platforms has also become important. Like, Elvish Yadav, who may have been a wild card contestant, but taking advantage of his fan following, he won the trophy. Contestants like Munawar Farooqui, Abhishek Malhan aka Fukra Insaan, Ankita Lokhande, Ayesha Khan, Vivian Dsena, Isha Malviya were also successful in connecting their fans with the show.

Its advantage is that if the contestant does something at home, both his supporters and opponents become active on social media.
Actually, the makers do not choose the ‘controversial’ people, but the ‘content providing’ people.
It is important to understand this difference. Not every controversial person is a good Bigg Boss contestant and not every calm person is a bad contestant. What makers really need is strong personality, conflict, fan base, emotional attachment and an inspiring story.
That is why on one hand very controversial faces like Swami Om came to Bigg Boss, while on the other hand different people like Siddharth Shukla, Asim Riaz, Munawar Farooqui, Karanvir Mehra also became popular.
