Protests started after the Supreme Court’s decision
Bangladesh became independent in 1971 and from this year onwards, a 56% quota system was implemented there. In this, 30% reservation was given to the children of freedom fighters, 10% to backward districts, 10% to women, 5% to minorities and 1% to the disabled. According to this, there is 56% reservation in government jobs.
In 2018, after 4 months of protests by students, the Hasina government abolished the quota system, but on 5 June last month, the Supreme Court ordered the government to re-implement reservation. The court said that the reservation that was available before 2018 should be re-implemented in the same manner.
The Sheikh Hasina government also appealed against this decision of the Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court upheld its old decision. This angered the students. Now protests are being held all over the country against this.
PM Hasina’s address to the nation
Earlier on Wednesday, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the nation. She announced that a judicial inquiry committee will be formed to investigate the deaths in the movement against reservation. During this, Sheikh Hasina appealed to the protesting students to maintain faith in the judicial system of the country. She assured the students that they will get justice.
Sheikh Hasina expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property in the reservation protests. She appealed to the students not to give the miscreants a chance to take advantage of the situation. The Prime Minister said that those who have committed murders and damaged public property will be brought to justice, no matter which party they belong to.
This is the first time after the general elections held in January that such large scale protests are taking place in the country. These protests are also being joined by the children of the people who gave independence to Bangladesh in 1971. People say that the Hasina government has given reservation to those people whose income is high.
These are the people who are considered Hasina’s voters. The government says that 30% reservation in jobs was given to handicapped people and people from minority communities.
Students have 5 demands….
1- Reservation should be reduced from 56% to 10%.
2- If no eligible candidate is found from the reserved seats then recruitment should be done from the merit list.
3- There should be a same examination for all.
4- Age should be same for all the candidates.
5- No candidate should use reservation more than once.
